David C. Matthews has completed another four pages of his long awaited Dyna episode, "Menace in Metal." It's excellent.
It's always amusing to me the way artists who draw muscular women
get "greedy" - I've discussed this with some of them, and most
acknowledge it. The idea behind Matthews' Dyna is something similar to
the Captain Marvel mythos - a normal woman with no powers owns a
magical item that transforms her into a heroic figure of great power.
In this case, the figure is extremely, ahem, heroic. But Matthews loves
drawing buff chicks so much that even the nerdy alter-ego of Dyna,
"Deena," looks like she's been spending four days a week in the gym for
the last three years.
I'm not complaining, mind you. I just think it's an amusing glimpse inside Dave's mind. (And
of course I wish I lived on this imaginary world of Dave's where even
nerdy chicks have the muscle to bench their bodyweight for reps.)
OK, I'm beginning to get the site architecture reined in. When you
come to the home page, you will see both "Newsflashes" and blog
entries. Basically, that's everything I've written lately except FAQs,
with links to some older stuff at the bottom. If you click through to
"Blog" on the left menu, you just get the blog entries without the
Newsflashes.
Newsflashes will tend to be very brief - things I expect the
readership will be interested to know but that I don't necessarily have
very much to say about. Blog entries will tend to be longer.
Newsflashes come in two varieties, straight Newsflashes and "User tips".
Soon I will be adding a story archive and also a forum which will
do double duty as a message board and a discussion thread for blog
posts. I will also be adding a moderated gallery, as soon as I can
figure out how to make it work and pick some people to do the
moderating.
Please bear with me - I am using nearly all my free time getting
this new site up to speed. I do hope to restore the lost Transvigor
content, but for now that's not possible. I have restored all the paid
advertising, which gets me back on the right side of the people who
paid for it, I hope.
One more thing - if you aren't
registering or logging in, you are missing some of the content and
links. There are things I'm just not offering to Google and other
search engines, and to people who just come here off the web. You're
missing out if you don't sign in.
There was an article about Annika Sorenstam's weight training that appeared in the June 20 issue of the Rocky Mountain News. It's stll online, and it says she benches 150. Hat tip to reader Ron.
One
of my favorite comics is the Hernandez Brothers' Love and Rockets
series. They have published the comic under numerous titles,
but the rambling list of characters doesn't change terribly much over
the years, though the characters themselves do change, like real people. It's a
novelty in the comics world to see characters who age and who
progress. When Bruce Wayne first appeared he was about my
grandfather's age, and now he's about my age - he hasn't changed since
1940.
When Petra and her sister Fritz first appeared, as shown at
right, they were simply big-busted party fodder. That was around 1990 -
the image of Petra with the big boobs and the twig-like arms is from Complete Love & Rockets #10. In 1992 Gilbert Hernandez made the two the stars of his sex comedy, Birdland.
