Those of you who are content creators may have heard my rant about
copyrights and "digital rights management" issues. The idea is
that if a person has created something, or purchased the distribution
rights to a thing, he ought to be able to set the terms under which it
is distributed. Imagine that a photographer has published a photo on the web and indicated that any person is allowed to download the photo for his own enjoyment for free, but may not distribute or republish the photo elsewhere, i.e. Usenet. With a good DRM scheme, the photographer will be able to encode the file in such a fashion that redistribution is not possible. Sun Microsystems has launched an open-source DRM initiative, which promises to unite all kinds of content distribution under one schema. I hope it works. Digital Rights Management [Wikipedia]
