Warren Ellis is Easily Flattered
Monday, 28 August 2006
I was checking out Warren Ellis and found this post:

Oh my god. Infamous Defamer-style Silicon Valley gossipblog/club-hammer Valleywag has created and released their inaugural Spider Jerusalem Award for the best blurb in tech journalism.

This is peculiarly glorious to me.

It's particularly embarrassing to me.
  • First off: "infamous?" Infamous in the sense that so few people read Valleywag that it's become a cautionary tale for imperia-blog overreach?
  • Secondly, the editor of Valleywag is a guy named Nick Douglas, who appears to be 14 or 15 years old - though from other reports I wouldn't be surprised if working for Nick Denton is now causing him to age at three or four times the normal rate.
  • Thirdly, Douglas rose to the top of the structurally unsound Silicon Alley blogger heap with Blogebrity, which was a quasi-sly attempt to reinforce blogger celebrity aspirations while simultaneously mocking them. [Note to Warren: you're a B-lister on Blogebrity.]
It should be noted that Nick Douglas did not list Mighty Lingster on his Blogebrity list despite the fact that Amaz0ns gets more traffic than most of the Gothamist sites put together. (Maybe we need undergroundblogebrity.com?) I'm not above admitting I hold a grudge although, seriously, I'm probably better off not showing up on anything that lists Wil Wheaton as an A-lister.

I've been rereading some of your posts on Warren Ellis and there's a common theme: you don't appear to be that fond. Is there a particular reason for this?

I actually like him fairly well. There's a kind of an arrogance about him, though - sort of a Hemingway-esque air of the great man having his bathroom window altered to permit him to speak with passers-by on the sidewalk while he would shit. (Yes, Hemingway actually did that.)
