Boddingtons Beer Maid
Boddington's Made Her Strong!
Boddington's, a brand of beer with which some of you may be familiar, has an interesting print ad campaign: pictures of very attractive women, morphed to muscular proportions. It's not quite what it seems, though.

Shedwa, an advertising blogger, notes that:

These ads are a little strange. The first time glancing at them, I didn't even notice the message they were trying to send. I just saw some pretty faces and large chests; typical of beer advertising. But after a second look, I saw the muscular arms. Then the ads kinda made sense, but still didn't stand out as brilliant. They're just weird beer ads, but at least they tried to do something different.

I kinda like 'em. Shedwa's got all three ads at the link.

Heheheheh - that's quite funny. All the pulling on the beer tab just makes one arm muscular. Heheheheh.

remember the "Cream of Manchester" ad with Mel Sykes and the ice-cream van in the desert? That was good, but I reckon this is better. There's something very hot about a girl who drinks pints (or in these ads, that pulls them), especially when it's actual beer and not the American gnat's p*** commonly known as Budweiser (he sas godng Lingster).

I'm a Yuengling man, myself.

Forget cans, bottles are better - twisting off the top is excellent work for the forearms.

And I'm a Berghoff man here - dark or when available, bock. 8)

It's still lager, it's not heavy, warm, brown British beer. :P Oh, and AlexG - the proper way to have beer is at cask strength, pumped at a pub, hence the buff right arm reference, because it's that arm that 'pulls' the pints in a pub.

Looks like someone rendered arms in Poser and collaged them into the photos.

I've just been on the Yuengling site, and was pleased to see that they made an ale as well as lager, but I was baffled that no mention of the use of hops was made. :!: Perhaps this is why British beer is so strange to the US palate; without hops, it would taste different indeed! Then again, I'm a single malt whisky man, not a beer drinker (even British beer is too fizzy or gassy, for me).

Come from Washington State, according to the Wikipedia entry.

I don't think British beer is strange to the US palate. I think Americans may see beer in a broader framework, with some beers (Coors Light, Rolling Rock Pale Ale, Bud Light) barely more flavorful than ginger ale, all the way up to some of the darker beers available in the US, including the various porters and stouts.

It's likely the mean robustness of beers favored by Americans is less than that of Britons, but I think Americans may choose beers for the occasion more than Britons do.

I thought it was odd not using hops in an ale!

Some guy commenting there wrote:
The girls arms are strong because they have to pump the beer using the handle. They're saying Boddingtons is so popular that the 'pulling' arm gets strong. Hand pulled ales are very popular in British pubs.

That makes sense. But er, I've never drank the stuff.
