I was driving along this afternoon when I had a stray thought about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and one of his more famous collections, Lady: Lisa Lyon. The book was released about 1983 and as art books go was very successful. A few years later Mapplethorpe became a household name, when a collection of his homoerotic photos were at the center of a storm regarding public financing of the arts. The scandal occurred after Andres Serrano's Piss Christ, which depicted a Catholic crucifix in a jar of urine, became a subject of dispute. Mapplethorpe's explicit photos were seen by many as a similar misuse of government funds to finance deliberately offensive or pornographic material. Regardless of all the controversy, Mapplethorpe (who died of AIDS in 1989) was a truly gifted photographer with an amazing eye for subject matter.

Lisa Lyons, the subject of the book, was a pioneer of women's bodybuildng. She won the first World Women's Bodybuilding Championship in Los Angeles in 1979, and met the photographer shortly thereafter at a party in New York. Mapplethorpe began shooting her in 1980. By today's standards Lyon was not very muscular at all, but she's very beautiful and photogenic. Mapplethorpe's juxtaposition of the feminine with the muscular still resonates.
