The Last Colony
Thursday, 18 September 2008

I'm reading John Scalzi's The Last Colony and I really like it so far.

I was a little skeptical going in. Reviews indicated that Jane Sagan, the superwoman from the first two books in the series, begins the book retired to civilian life and without superhuman abilities. She's just normal. I was enjoying the book all the same, but then in the fifth chapter something happens that made me very happy. I won't tell you what it is but since I'm mentioning it here you can probably figure it out.

Scalzi's become ridiculously successful and prolific over the last few years. And The Last Colony just came out in paperback, to make way for the next book in the series, so it's very affordable.

Update: I finished it and really enjoyed the novel.

If you're looking for leading female characters, another book you might want to try is In the Country of the Blind (2003) by Michael Flynn.

The artwork for the cover features a buffed woman breaking away from her chains.

I was recently introduced to the first book "Old Man's War" when in a bookstore.
I haven't read it yet but, by what the person who recommended it told me, I was hoping it might have some strong women along with the men. Glad to hear there is. Thanks.
