Titania
Lots of stuff going on in comics and on the various comics blogs. (The number of comics blogs, by the way, appears to swelling exponentially, requiring blogs about comics blogs to organize the output.) Since Wednesday is New Comics Day, here's some useful stuff about our favorite super-powered ladies:
Brian C. Poole explains the history and importance of Ms. Marvel on his MySpace blog.
[The Resurgence of Ms. Marvel]
There's a rumor that a Supergirl movie is on deck, and that Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer has been cast to play the character. By the way, if you're too young to remember the 1984 Supergirl movie, or have never seen it, mouse-over this text for a major spoiler. [Rumor mill: Supergirl returns … to the big screen? - Newsarama]
Blockade Boy reinvents the 1970s Marvel villain, Titania. He thinks her costume was bad, but I always kind of liked it. She was killed by The Scourge of the Underworld back in the 80s, paving the way for a new Titania.
[Rescue Me: Titania]
My favorite bit of comics-blogging of the last week comes from LiveJournal user Ben-San Arizona, who writes:
Okay, so apparently Mary Marvel is getting a Sexy Evil Makeover Seduction Whatever. The feminist-comics blogosphere is abuzz about it, or at least it was sometime last week - I don't read comics blogs as regularly as some, so I'm only now catching up. Anyway, I've got something to say here. Maybe a little too much to say.
I've read the porn where Mary Marvel gets transformed by sexy evil. Heck, I've occasionally written the porn where Mary Marvel gets transformed by sexy evil. Yes, I have fantasies that objectify women, and really I'm not particularly ashamed about it; I know women whose fantasies objectify men in the same basic ways, and we're all comfortable with it. What I am not comfortable with is this actually showing up in the comics.
"Transformed by sexy evil" is going to be my new catchphrase.
...the soundtrack is very popular, which is why it goes for premium prices. This BSG gal is too old to play Supergirl, no matter which version you pick. Warner should concentrate on either the WW film, the rumored Captain Marvel film, or the Ryan Reynolds Flash project.
Blockade Boy's re-imagining of Titania is painfully tame, IMHO.

Wait, I loved that Supergirl movie! Of course, I was about 5 when I saw it, but still...
