I enjoy Google Trends - it helps me find all sorts of interesting information nodes and crossroads. Just today I was researching to see how various superheroes have grown or decreased in popularity and discovered that Wonder Woman is more popular in Indonesia than anywhere else in the world.

By nature a cynic, I suspected there might be some creepy shenanigans involved in her Indonesian popularity: sure enough, it's the freakin' lasso. Searches for the term "lasso" are even more phenomenally popular in Indonesia than those for "Wonder Woman" - higher than anywhere else in the world. In fact, twenty times as many searches for "lasso" originate in Indonesia than in Germany, widely considered to be the BDSM capital of the world. I had no idea that the world's largest Muslim country had such a kinky attachment to fetish bondage!

Wonder Woman's popularity is likely to grow even larger following next month's release of the new Wonder Woman animated movie on DVD, especially with her lariat featured so prominently on the poster [at right].
