Kat McPhee to be Wonder Woman?
Tuesday, 29 August 2006
This has the ring of truth about it: that Joss Whedon is considering recovering bulimic Kat McPhee to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming movie. Such a move, of course, would be everything Wonder Woman fans have feared since the moment Whedon was announced as director. His ass-kicking females typically look more "heroin" than "heroine": malnourished and fragile. If that's the direction he wants to take, so be it, but he shouldn't expect fans to pay to see an emaciated "amazon".

Katharine McPhee is a former "American Idol" contestant. While she stands 5'8" tall she has a history of eating disorders and lost 30 pounds while competing in "American Idol". She has some dance training but no athletic background that I can determine. IMDB credits her with one acting role. In a way McPhee's casting would be reminiscent of Whedon's hiring of Summer Glau in "Firefly" - like McPhee, Glau is tall, skinny, lacked acting experience at the time of her casting but excelled in some other performing art. (Glau is a ballet dancer.)

I saw her on The View (HEY!!! I was waiting for the noon news ok.) And was impressed by her height and looks but man did she come across as a major diva. Her recent press hasn't helped disuade that. I seriously doubt she'd take direction well or submit to the necessary athletic prep to get into WW shape. BTW - Glau did a damned good job.

Glau did a good job yes, but the suspension of disbelief needed for her scenes of ass whupping in Serenity was painful.

In all fairness, what had Lynda Carter done prior to WW? Also, apparently Katharine McPhee is going to be featured in Shape Magazine next month as someone who has recovered from an eating disorder. So, I will reserve my judgment until I have had a chance to peruse the aisles of my local CVS...

What's this "reserve judgment" bullshit? The essence of blogging is to express your opinion before actually knowing what you're talking about. I try to lead by example here, people! Eyes front!
