I was browsing the shelves at my local comic book retailer today and happened upon Mineshaft Magazine #18.
I wrote up Mineshaft Magazine #15 three years ago, because it featured illustrations by Robert Crumb.
Crumb's work often depicts powerful, well-developed women, and that is A-OK with me, amigos.
So it was with some surprise that I found another of the mid-20th century's great chroniclers of brawny femininity described in issue #18.
Larry Heller of
LH-ART authored an essay for the magazine describing the photographic career of his father, Orrin J. Heller, which was focused on the depiction of muscular female circus performers.
Heller's article contains several photographs I had never before seen, including a muscular blond trapeze artist who is quite the dish.
Mineshaft Magazine #18 is strongly recommended.
Hello Amazons,
I appreciate you taking the time to mention Mineshaft #15 and #18 to your viewers & readers. We're currently working on a 16 page photo spread of O.J. Heller vintage photos showing strong women working out and doing stunts on Muscle Beach, California during the 1940's & 50's. Mineshaft #22 will include a front cover photo by O.J. Heller showing powerful Edna Rivers holding up 4 people on her shoulders on Muscle Beach which is incredible! Lots of Pudgy Stockton and other greats inside, plus artwork by R. Crumb and more from our regular contributors. Mineshaft #22 should be off in the mail by the end of July.
Thanks again,
Everett Rand

Mineshaft #18 came out October 2006! Looks like I'm going to have to track #18 down, and look forward to #22.
OJH's work really deserves the coffee table book treatment. Taschen, anyone?

I'll definitely let you know when the Muscle Beach feature comes out this summer and be glad to send you a copy. Thanks again for your interest! Larry Heller, O.J. Heller's son, is writing the introduction and working on captions for the feature. There really does need to be a large book made of Orrin J. Heller's strong woman photos, but in the meantime we're very happy and fortunate to be able to publish some of this material in Mineshaft!
