Buff Mermaid
The secondary plot of the 2000 Keanu Reeves vehicle The Replacements involved a professional football cheerleader captain having to re-staff her squad with various oddballs during a player strike. In a humorous twist, she hired several strippers and the cheerleading squad then employed pole-dancing moves in its new routines. Exotic-dancers-as-cheerleaders was intended as humor, because obviously such a thing could never happen in real life.

Fast forward seven years and it's now common for professional sports team cheerleaders to prance around like topless dancers in a titty bar. And I'm not really complaining, so much as pointing out how unthinkable this would have been just a few years ago, prior to the mainstreaming of internet porn in the U.S., and before the pop music careers of Britney and Christina. It's kind of amazing.

The Florida Marlins' dance team, the Mermaids, have embraced this trend with verve, as is evident in this video.

Like a lot of dance and cheerleader squads, the Mermaids have some seriously buff members. The girl at right showed up in a photostream by Flickr user "Ryan Imitates Life", called Florida Marlins - there are several Mermaids photos in the set. The Mermaids also have their own page at the Marlins site.

Unlike hoochie cheering, however, the Floridian preference for built mermaids is not a recent development.
