Ben Silverman and American Gladiators
Monday, 17 September 2007
Defamer summarized W Magazine's Ben Silverman profile this weekend. Silverman is the new NBC co-chairman responsible for bringing back "American Gladiators". It's a bit tedious - he comes off like a self-promoting egomaniac. From the W piece:

...When NBC tapped Silverman to be its cochairman (he shares the title with Marc Graboff, a buttoned-down veteran of the network's business operations), many in the TV business were surprised to see an open-collared, Jaguar XKR-driving, party-hopping producer ascend to one of the industry's most powerful posts. Silverman, however, is quite confident that he's up to the task. "I think I am the audience, you know what I mean? I viscerally respond. I am conceptual and a dealmaker," he says, sitting in his new office at NBC. (The place is undecorated but overflowing with congratulatory gifts that include a T-shirt declaring I'M A GENIUS!) "Those are things that usually don't all come in the same package. I am the perfect storm for making a television executive."

I'll take any port in a perfect storm, if it gets buff chicks back on TV.

NBC seems to be investing some serious ducats in "American Gladiators". The network has been conducting casting calls in several major cities, and it's sent scouts into the field - the FAME fitness events people report a sighting at one of their events over the weekend.

My suspicion is that NBC is looking to mimic the casting of WWE wrestling: the male gladiators will be steroid-popping lunatics, but the female gladiators will look like jacked swimsuit models. Unlike wrestling, however, "American Gladiators" needs real athletes because the contests won't be choreographed.

...sound like a perfect a*** rather than a perfect storm, but, as you say:

Hmm... how buff will they be? If you"re taking the WWE route, then you're less likely to see 21st century versions of Raye "Zap" Hollit or "Ice". I liked how the original Gladiators had different body types from the blond "cheerleader" babe, the harder fitness chick and finally, the built like a tank hardcore FBB.

NBC'd have to be crazy to not get the best athletes they can for the female Gladiators. If the female Gladiators consistently get steamrolled by the contenders, the revival of American Gladiators will die quickly as fans of the original blast NBC for making the Gladiators pushovers.
