If you were allowed to own a TV in Hungary in the 1980s, this is the kind of fitness TV commercial the merciless apparatchiks of the Supreme Soviet forced you to endure. (And yes, the state of the art Hungarian exercise gear being flogged appears to be two dowels connected by giant rubber bands.)

(Older U.S. and Canadian readers may recall this TV spot for Wendy's, titled Soviet Fashion.)

Hmm. Blues Brothers meets '50s retro meets Jane Fonda/Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical." Must've been Hungary's proximity to Western Europe.

Ah, yes, I remember Wendy's Russian spot when it was first broadcast on the telly. Word was there was a bit of ire from the Russian community thinking that Wendy's was dumping on the nation and the culture, not the no-choice no-fun system that was running the nation's show then. Frankly, Wendy's got more stir and reaction from the English teachers from their ad line, "Ain't No Reason to Go Anyplace Else."

At least the MC running the fashion show in the ad is an Amazon... er... sorta...
