Monica Carlson wins American Gladiators
Monday, 18 February 2008

American GladiatorsSports model and mother-of-two Monica Carlson ran away with the "American Gladiators" womens' championship last night. (Plucky drama queen Evan Dollard won for the men.) About halfway through, Monica gave a speech that began something like, "As women, we have many roles..." Monica's a smart girl - she grabbed her opportunity to cynically regurgitate a variety of popular truisms on national TV in the hope, I suppose, of showing up in a Nike ad. And good luck to her. She'd be a great Nike spokeswoman.

There were a lot of problems reported back to me regarding the competition throughout the season. One guy was incensed that Christine Kim was not given time to put her shoe back on after she lost it on "Eliminator". Others wrote in upset that the quality of the female competitors was not good - in the end only three of the four finalists (Monica Carlson, Shanay Norvell and Siene Silva) seemed to be of the caliber required for the show.

A lot of these were related to the crew learning how to produce a show like this. Hopefully next season will go more smoothly.

The first thing they need to do is replace some of the Figure Gladiators with some properly intimidating women.

I felt, production wise, the show worked fine. I liked it.

What DID annoy me, was the women contestants.

Not their prowess or anything like that - generally, with the exception of the bull rider, I couldn't stand any of them. I tried, but I'd just fast forward someone when they gave inspirational speeches.

True, the men did this too, but nowhere near as frequently, and when they did trashtalking - it made up for it. For example, the firefighter saying that Titan has a great face, so it's going to be a shame he's going to beat the crap out of it.

I think the stars of the show were Titan, Crush, and Wolf. All extremely entertaining and lots of fun to watch.

As I say - I enjoyed it far more than not. But... damn. Some of those contestants were just boring, bland people on screen. (Off screen, I'm sure they're great.)

He may be able to see it on cable or satellite.

I just wanted to clarify for anyone reading that Fett is outside the target market for the show. Now that the UK Gladiators show is coming back, perhaps his comments will be useful to the producers of that program(me).

Why wouldn't my comments be useful about this show? I saw it, after all.

Well, they're useful but it may also be useful for someone reading to know you're in the UK.

So what if I am? Over here, do we not LOVE and LAUGH as you? Huh? HUH.

That's right mister, racist.

*snaps fingers*

Ow. That hurt.

The Grauniad thinks you're important, Fett. But as the paper has been wrong about nearly everything since the lead-up to the Second World War, take it with a grain of salt.

... *sniff*... Thank you. *takes salt*
