An Alaska newspaper reported on Friday that Tanji Johnson canceled a local speaking engagement because she has been hired by "American Gladiators":
International Federation of Bodybuilders fitness professional Tanji Johnson was scheduled to speak as well. But at the last minute, she was hired by NBC for its new version of "American Gladiators."
I have not been able to find any information confirming Tanji Johnson's casting or regarding other final casting for "American Gladiators."
If you're unfamiliar with her, you can visit the official site of
Tanji Johnson.
Update: Video interview with Tanji Johnson at this year's Arnold Expo, after the jump.
I always thought Tanji was hot. But given her small size, I personally see her more as an AG competitor than an AG gladiator (just a random observation, as neither condition is implied from this article entry).

Really? At the FTVideo forums they said the gladiators are contracted to remain mum until the official announcement next year.

I have no firsthand source on this subject at all. I am simply conveying what was already published in the Juneau Empire.
And by the way, it's one thing to keep the identities of unknowns a secret; which is the case with most reality shows. Keeping the identities of high-profile athletes and physique competitors a secret is a different game altogether. I'll be very surprised if we don't know the identities of all the gladiators before the end of the month. (Don't forget they'll start filming the episodes before an audience in two weeks.)

It was announced on her Yahoo group that 6' 1" Robin Coleman has started training for Gladiators as well.

I don't know anything about her except this: I have an irrational loathing of Flash sites, and I think she looks too small. However, I do not think that Robin Coleman is too small  for crying out loud, if she gets to compete against some slightly buff 5'5" girl she'll rip her in half! I'm slightly surprised that they'd opt for her, actually, as she is so big and a former World's Strongest Woman competitor (so extremely strong) and, with her "husky" voice, I would think she wouldn't be as marketable, though the schmoe in me ain't complaining.

I've heard some people suggest that because Robin has a deep voice, she must have taken steroids at some point. But she has a smooth voice, not the rough 'pubescent boy' sound that most steroid abusers have.
I think she's just a natural alto. She's a big girl, and I don't think there's anything out of the ordinary in her having a deeper voice. And regardless I think it's within the normal register for a woman.
She's very sexy and I can easily see her playing a 'bruiser' role on the show.

That's an interesting point - I had wondered, but, now you come to mention it, it's the rasping that tends to give away a steroid abuser, and certainly facially I've never seen any obvious signs (no square jaw or bad skin, for example). I'm very glad that the producers have shown the guts to cast a bigger woman. 8)

I think she's just a natural alto.
I've also thought about how her voice is curiously smooth. That said, dunno if it's perfectly free of raspiness (an even smoother deep voice belongs to Jennifer Lien of ST: Voyager fame).
However, if by some chance the voice is Robin's default, that almost makes her a natural tenor, not a natural alto ;)
(isn't there a name for such things? Contralto maybe?)

For women I think the three divisions are alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano.

I still remember watching her pick up a full 5 gallon water cooler jugg by the neck with one hand while removing the empty with the other.

Tanji looked pretty impressive at this year's Olympia. The show is bound to enter variety of people so don't expect bigger, heavier opponents all the time.
