The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Some of you may have watched "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" last night on FOX.
I liked it pretty well - it's certainly better than "The Bionic Woman" while operating on a similar concept.
The gist of it is that Sarah Connor, John Connor and their pet terminator "Cameron" are out to save the world and prevent Skynet from becoming self-aware on
August 29, 1997 March, 2003 July 24, 2004 April 21, 2011.
Of course the best thing about the show is Summer Glau going all River Tam on people.
She's the good terminator in the show, so once again she gets to play the low-affect hottie who can kill you without even blinking.
There are several problems with the show:
- Lena Headey's "Sarah Connor" is far less damaged a personality than the Linda Hamilton depiction in Terminator 2.
She lacks the bitterness and paranoia, and also the wiry physique so many found compelling.
She doesn't seem disturbed.
- The character is also written to be less competent than in the second film - the Sarah Connor of T2 was a wily and resourceful, whereas the new version seems more like a soccer mom on the run.
I didn't care for that.
- And while I love Summer Glau, it's a little annoying that these two powerful female characters are both played by such slender women.
In Dark Horse Comics' 1990
Terminator series, the terminators were all drawn as quite massive, including the female, who had a bodybuilder's physique.
While placing such tremendous strength in the body of someone as slender as Summer Glau may be interesting from a story perspective, it throws off the balance of the plot.
The Schwarzenegger terminator doesn't have to resort to violence to intimidate people - he intimidates them just by looking at them and uses violence when he wants them dead.
Every time Summer Glau's terminator wants something from someone, she'll have to stage a demonstration, which makes her strength far less useful.
All in all I liked it.
