I used to have a job where I'd assist corporate sales reps selling all over the world.
The reps would chase a prospect down, warm him up, and then I or one of my colleagues would come in and close the deal with our technical or clinical experience in the prospect company's niche.
One of our reps was a Brit whose default expression of gratitude to any affirmative response was "You're a star!"
So it would go like this:
Rep: Jim, do you think you could help me out on a conference call this Wednesday? Jim: Sure.
What time? Rep: You're a star!
How about 11:30am? Jim: Yeah, that works. Rep: You're a star!
So now I can't help but chuckle whenever I hear a Brit say "You're a star!"
A lot of people aren't aware that Mariah Carey is a big girl - at least 5'9", not skinny and despite her weight fluctuations very athletic and strong.
The best British interviewer Dave Berry can say after she kicks his ass arm wrestling is "You're a star!"
When I first read this post, I thought, "No, that can't be right, she's less than 5'". Then, I realized that was Paula Abdul. Finally, I realized that I actually had no idea who Mariah Carey was. And for some reason I can't quite explain (a baseless antipathy towards celebrity culture?), that made me happy.
