Kay Baxter

Kay Baxter performs her routine at the 1985 Ms. Olympia competition.

Baxter was generally considered too muscular by judges and rarely placed well in competitions. Kay Baxter was killed in an automobile accident in May of 1988 was inducted posthumously into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2001. Baxter was a favorite of the Women's Physique World set of the era, winning reader polls for favorite bodybuilder numerous times.

I remember the first time I saw Kay Baxter. I think it was 1981 at only my second show. The Ms. Olympia was in Atlantic City, the Nationals had been a few months before in AC as well, and since I was going to school a few miles away I had to go. I got tickets for the prejudging only and was very disappointed at how short it was. Anyway at the time Laura Coombs was the big gal at the time and she was onstage a few before her. Rachel was of course the perceived ideal and she was hot one of my favorites. But then Kay came out and she stunned the crowd. I was astounded. Her was a woman of unbelievable mass who made Rachel look emaciated. She was bigger than anyone there and had delts that made her look a mile wide. The murmurs from the crowd became more approving as she went through the poses. Later as they started the comparisons you could see they didn't know what to do with her. She finally one a Pro-World championship years later. She was supposed to MC the Extravaganza and since I was a volunteer for the show I was looking forward to meeting the woman who blew me away a few years before. Sadly it was not to be as she died in a car wreck a month or so before.

2 things interest me here:

1. She's not that big by modern standards.

2. The commentator says that she thinks that the majority of drug use is in the amateur level (I'd be willing to bet that there's a lot stronger drugs at Pro level these days).
