Stockton, 1948

I missed this until now, but Abbye "Pudgy" Stockton passed away at the end of June. She was 88. After World War II, Stockton became the first person to successfully sell the idea of women's weight and strength training. Her own feats of strength at Muscle Beach were well-known at the time, and her photos still appear from time to time on Gold's Gym marketing and advertising material. She was an early personal trainer in the Los Angeles area and was a fairly frequent fitness cover model. Her husband Les predeceased her by two years. She was a great and important lady.

The Los Angeles Times published an extended obituary.

When I first locked on to the idea that a muscular woman could be sexy I searched back issue bins of muscle magazines looking for anything and articles featuring Pudgy caught my eye. She was a true pioneer.

...introduced me to her, or if I discovered her in some mag in the '80s but, I'm very sad to hear she passed. It would've been great to have had an opportunity to meet her.
