"You know how girls are," said Jackie Wareing of Virginia Beach. "It's always, 'No, you go first,' when a group of girls fishes."
Competing in the fourth annual Wine, Women and Fishing offshore tournament - a women-only fund-raiser for breast cancer held last weekend out of Rudee Inlet - Wareing and the crew on the Sarah Jean had to come up with something better than drawing straws because standing around being cordial could be the difference between a fish getting off the line or to the boat.
So the ladies turned to a man's mentality. They arm-wrestled for first fish. Then for second fish, and third, and so on.
It proved to be tough competition.
"We had some pretty strong girls,' Wareing said.
Strong enough that Wareing, the director of the personal training program at Wareing's Gym, didn't get first chair.
I'm going to have to start going to more women's fishing tournaments. [Source:
