Microsoft's Zune has launched. This is probably the first serious competitor to the iPod.

Funny how Apple has become what they made fun of in 1984.

I quite like the Sandisk Sansa e200 series for competition with the Nano. After looking long and hard I purchased one and have been very pleased with it.

Microsoft will do well with the Zune after a few iterations. It's their business model.

It's more accurate to say that [media players = IBM PC], because what's happening is that they're becoming a commodity. Still, the move to video will keep the iPod and other leading competitors fresh for at least another 18 months. Beyond that it may fall to bleeding-edge display designs to keep the cool factor going - flexible, retractable displays? One thing that's important to note is that media players (like the iPod) have succeeded by pushing the boundaries of what's possible with consumer-grade electronics miniaturization. I've opened up a fourth-gen iPod and let me tell you, that sucker is pretty freakin' intricate.

The problem with Zune is it makes the same mistake the iPod does: it's tied at the hip to its proprietary software.

I would much rather have a Sansa or a Creative (or even a Toshiba Gigabeat on which the Zune is based) that connects to any PlaysForSure music store.
