Title: Don't Get Too Excited - Nothing New
Post by: Fett on May 23, 2006, 08:33 PM
Hi all.

It occurs to me that I've not actually really uploaded any of my images to this site, and dagnabit, I should've by now. If only as a thank you to Lingster for being such a gracious host.

So, I'm uploading a handful of pics, and maybe more as time goes by. Sadly, most of you will have already seen most of these pics, but maybe some of you haven't and you can enjoy it. Also, I'll include an "artist's commentary" saying whatever nonsense pops into my head. Click the thumbnail for the full-sized pic.

Aki, the Cover-girl

I did this picture for Wreck Shop's now sadly defunct paysite, "Rough House".

(For those of you with legal worries, the pictures I did for Rough House are my own works, were done with the permission of the depicted character's creators, and were not done as work-for-hire or any contractual obligation. Plus, we're on good terms, I doubt he's got a problem with me uploading them.)

Aki is the creation of Masschine, and I was glad to do this picture. It was a lot of fun to do, and I was extremely pleased with Aki's face. There are some problems, but I do like it overall. Also, all the blurbs on the FHM cover are taken from actual FHM covers. I looked for all the blurbs that had anything to do with male power or health and fitness, something no one seems to have noticed. I did it to reinforce the main appeal a lot of fbb fans have for fbbs, especially as shown on Awefilms.com, which is where Masschine works, and where the Aki comic - "Paladins" comes from - which is of the raw physical power of bodybuilding women, and the excitement of displays of that power.

Not only that, but the cover to Paladins was a Maxim spoof done by Wreck, and I thought it would be good to pay homage to that.

And, Masschine's real name is on that cover, for laughs.

But, of course, you've got to accept that FHM would never do a cover like this - unless they wanted to sabotage their own magazine. Which kinda sounds like The Producers to me.

Mild-Mannered Idal

This is Wreck Shop's own site mascot, the idyllic Idal. This was another Rough House pic, but not intended to be so. Wreck was always unbelievably nice to me, and gave me my own site on his domain, "Fettcom". Part of the original design of that site was an interview, and I drew this piece for the interview section of the site. But the interview section never occurred, and Wreck decided to add it to Rough House, which was fine with me.

I love the proportions of Idal in this picture. I actually think the colouring is too severe, it looks to 'painty', but I think the physical pose of Idal is one of my favourites. I love her face, hands, and her pose, I particularly love the way the suit clings to her body. I am particularly impressed with myself because my original draft made her seem very, very, bulky. I was really happy when I drew this as she actually looks kinda svelte, in a bizarre way, considering the size of this woman's arms, chests and well... she's huge all over. But the colouring, especially the purple background... nah.

One thing I wanted to do was add to the card in her hat, "Bench Press", but sadly, I couldn't make it legible.

Another time.

Day

My very own character, my lovely Vanessa "Ness" Marz. She's a cutie pie. This is the first of two images, both of her on holiday. The second is below. Of the two, this is my favourite, but most people prefer the latter.

Also, I love the palm tree's bark, but can't remember how I did it.

Ah, Ness. She still talks to me in my head. Messing around, telling me to take her picture once more... But then I tell her to take off her clothes, and she tells me to piss off and hides.

C'est la vie.

Night

The second of these two pieces, and the infinitely more popular one. I wanted to do a day and night picture, and drew this and didn't like it. So much so, I almost didn't post it. But I did - for two reasons:

1) I wanted to upload two pictures, one night and one day.
2) I realised that in the first picture, the sand covering Ness' feet may have looked like I was covering up her feet because I couldn't draw feet. To prove to everyone (but mainly myself) that I could draw feet, I felt I had to upload this image.

Lo and behold, everyone claims it as their most favourite pic of all time. Yeah, I know the tag, "How can someone so powerful be so coy?", especially since at that time, the only name she had was "hyperteen", as CDR had called her (a title she liked, but found rather embarrasing - she's really quite lazy) until I revealed her name. So yes, everyone loves this piece.

I think it's okay.

The only piece people seem to like more than this one is...

Threads

... because I overdid the bicep. I haven't actually made the bicep fit actual physical anatomy. Her shoulder muscles should overtake the bicep and draw it more into her body, something that harsh black line prevents. So a bit of a mistake.

Also, I admit, there's no way her hand can reach her forearm, like it does.

Despite that, it's a funny picture and was intended for Fettcom, namely for the "Threads" section. Wreck Shop wanted to post all the original threads, including the thread I debuted on, on Fettcom for archival purposes. So, the title and the entire theme of the pic is a pun on the word "Threads". I'm a funny man.

Also, the icon on the t-shirt is called "Grimace" and was an avatar option on Wreck Shop's forum and belonged to two posters I have a particular fondness for - Blargolis who seemed to love me, and jnw550, aka "Stoneyman" and "Mr Stone", who was an unbelievably nice and reasonable man, with whom I had many discussions with. Originally, I planned on putting CDR's avatar on the t-shirt since he'd been so after me to draw a picture of a woman's muscles bursting out of their clothes, but I decided to honour two posters instead of one, not because I liked them more than other posters, but simply because of the efficiency of being able to honour as many supports as possible.

Not only that, but that emoticon's face, I think, is incredibly appropriate to the theme of the pic.

Okay, okay. Ness asks me to tell you she wasn't happy with the t-shirt, nor my taking of the pic. She was particularly peeved about the whole thing. And who had to call up the people and demand their money back? Me. Not Ness. Me. She couldn't be bothered to "go through all that crap", so muggins here had to do it. She wasn't allowed a refund, and so she just cut the sleeves off and wears it when she works out, which makes the Grimace emoticon even more appropriate as it now resembles the wearer. (Incidentally, don't tell her I said that.)

I'm a newbie, just got access to this forum and this is my first post. I haven't seen these pics before, so I'm glad you shared them. Thank you!

I particularly like your manga style, and the FHM cover is really funny. Threads is also funny, and your characters are HAWT!

Ah, Ness is still as much of a pulse-poundingly musclebound sweetheart as the day she was drawn. ;)  Not saying I don't still appreciate Aki and Idal as much as ever either.

Heh, actually I'm not really a noob.  Yet, this is still the first time I've seen any of those pics.  Awesome pics, and thanks for the artist commentary :p, now I won't need to pick up the DVD.

Hey Fett can I do a mag cover too?

I don't want any misunderstanding and having people saying I ripped you off when that's exactly what I am asking to do.

It's like the principle of the matter, it's princibality.

I saw some of these pics from Wreck's old site, but since I wasn't a paid member, I never saw that first one.  Lovely work, Fett.  Hope to see some more.

Sorry, but I own all copyrights to people putting muscular women on the covers of magazines. ^_^

Of course you can do your own mag cover! Jeez, can you imagine the hypocracy if I said "no"? First of all, I don't own FHM, and all the cover blurbs are from their magazine. Secondly, Aki isn't my character. And third, I ripped off the idea from Wreck Shop! There is no way I could turn you down, even if I wanted to... which I don't, by the way. I wanna see more of your work!

I appreciate you asking, but it was kinda unneccessary in this case. ^_^

Ah... pardon me. It's just that I'm used to anime/manga, so I tend to see even the slightest hint as being anime/manga-influenced. Thank you for introducing me to Adam Hughes, it seems he has a range of styles. His less realistic ones kind of do resemble anime style, and your interpretation of it even has the flat-ish colouring and defined linework like in anime/manga. Your style is quite distinct from Adam Hughes, so I wouldn't call it "tracing", but you were probably just being modest *lol* Thank you for the welcome, I'm starting to snuggle into this forum quite comfortably.

Here is the uber-high res desktop background version of my avatar.

Fettcom

This was supposed to be the main background for Fettcom, and when Wreck Shop changed the design he incorporated this pick into it. So all turned out okay.

It is heavily inspired by a Sarah Michelle Gellar pic, that I thought was great.

I haven't got much to say about this one - while it's not particularly well-drawn and the colouring is too smooth - there's a real atmosphere to Ness' body language that I just adore - which means I'll probably revisit this some day.

Gallery

This was supposed to be for the gallery section of Fettcom. See what I did there? Gallery? Ness painting? I'm a genius. (Actually, the original was Ness sitting a museum, chewing bubble gum, bored out of her mind. I have those prelims lying around somewhere...)

One thing I like to point out is that if you look, Ness has a bit of a paunch to her gut, the idea of her being a little pudgy. However, her upper body is kinda ripped, making me wonder if it was a mistake and I pretended that it was intentional. I actually forget what the truth is.

I like the face a lot, and used it as a tease a long time ago when Wreck's forums got a facelift. Also her right hand (the one without the brush) I like a lot. I don't really have much to say about this one, except that the biceps are far too severe, and it's sloppy in certain areas - fitting I suppose considering the state of the painting job.

Lol. Man I guarantee that you are the paragon of the saying "an artist is his own worst critic"
Honestly, I see nothing wrong with the picture that would do so much to ruin it. So its not a Michalangelo, pfeh. Still a damn good musclegirl picture to my eyes.
(and lol, really sir. Biceps too severe? >:"O! Roffle)

Just a little update - all the links were slowly dying because imagevenue sucks ass. So I've done gone and got a photobucket and used that which seems much much nicer. The downside instead of thumbnails it's huge pics in the threads, but meh. I shouldn't think that would be a problem.
