I will be writing some sort of preview about the upcoming women's event the day before and short summaries afterwards.

Stay tuned!

I guess there will be no previews since it seems to be very difficult to find information about athletes. It seems one needs to have connections in some weightlifting association in order to get some up-to-date statistics. Most of the organizers - and even federations - don't care about informing the public which I'm strugling to understand  :-\

Today the women's competition started with 58 kg division. It was time to for new lifters to step up because this category European number one lifter, Marina Shainova, wasn't there today.

In snatch it was tough battle to make to the podium; first and second were tied with 96 kg and the third was on one kilo behind. Weird thing that Eurosport didn't televise this in Finland  ???

In C&J it was all Anastasia Novikava of Belarus. She only needed two attemps in order to secure her victory and lifts looked really effortless. Snatch winner, Romela Begaj, wasn't that strong in clean and jerk making only one succesfull lift, but it was enough for bronze medal in total. Roxana Cocos was really trying in front home crowd  and it looked pretty good at first, but she failed two times in 117 attempts. Julija Kalina's was second in alla categories.

Finlands' lifters Anna and Jenni placed 10th and 12th respectively.

It feels kind of weird to describe someone who could casually toss me across a room as "cute," but dang... she's cute!  :-*

Thanks for the report Maitolasi. I just wish weightlifting competitions were more widely broadcast. I mean who wouldn't want to see cute girls lifting near to twice their body weight over their heads!

Tell me about it. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when there isn't even a website where to check information about the competition. Sometimes there is, but I'm wondering why even ewf is not seeing the trouble for put up decent sites. It's really not that hard.

Hah, missed todays broadcast due to technical difficulties. Digitalised television is good as long as it works but sometimes it can be real pain in the ass.

Today was it was turn for the light weights, 48 kilos. Results hasn't been updated yet, but Taylan Nurgan - about whom I've talked about a little in SMFA thread - was the favourite to win the competition I guess. Very young athletes in lower weight classes, like Iovu Cristina - just 16 years old.

Tomorrow 53 kilos division. Hope I can watch it this time.

She's from Ukraine. Her cyrillic name is Юлія Калина and I guess this was her first international competition.

Shame that last year's silver ja bronze medalists Maria de la Puente and Julia Rohde didn't participate this year in 53 kg category. Nataliya Trotsenko renewd her victory from last year in all lift forms although in c&j Turkish Aylin Dasdalen really gave run for her monet; she made two attempts from 111 kg and hurt her elbow. First lift was really close to succeed, but it was too much today.

It was at last Gold for Sibel Şimşek of Turkey. So many times she's left to second place but today it was her time. All of her lifts looked really powerful even though she failed in her last 132 kg c&j attempt. In snatch she made all of her lifts power style.

European champion from two previous years, Meline "Unibrow" Daluzya, had to leave this time empty handed. It was nice to see some skandic people on stage when Kasirye Ruth took silver in total and was really pushing in snatch event pressure to Sibel.

Russia took their first women's medal in these competition when Tsarukaeva Svetlana won her tight battle with Armenian Daluzya.

Sibel Şimşek 108+128
Kasirye Ruth 107+124
Tsarukaeva Svetlana 103+125

Before 69 kilo category I thought the scrpt would be clear: Oxana Slivenko would take the gold and the rest would compete against eachothers. After snatch it looked like this. The Russian made three succesfull lifts with the confidence of former world record owner, but something changed in the clean and jerk; at first 136 kg lift faltering and fail at 140 kg. Lifts looked very wobbly and it looked at the moment that she might lose her grip to gold medal, but with the experience of multichampion she was able to pull it together and performed her best lift in high pressure.

Nazik Avdalyan of Serbia pushed the competition to it's final lifts. She took a risk and tried twice lifting 145 kg which would have secured her the championships but it was no good. It was just too much today. Anyway she made the ending exciting.

The personality of the competition goes to another Russian, Tatiana Matveeva. She really fought for third position in clean and jerki. She was six kilos behinf Yulia Artemova after snatch lifts but bested the Ukranian seven kilos in clean and jerk for bronze medal. Her lifts looked really wobbly but she managed to keep it together. She really needs to add some gripp in middle body and she would lift a lot more.

It was a bit disapponting not to see Nadezda Evstyukhina lifting. I have no indormation why she didn't participate but let's hope that she isn't injured. She would be needed in world champs to compete against likes of Cao Lei.

Alla Vazhenina - silver medalis in Beijing -  was absent too. Although I don't know do Kazakhs participate here or in Asian championships.

Anyway the script for gold was clear from start to finish. It was all about the Russian, once again. This is really tough division there, because if all the lifters would have been able to participate here, Russian would probably have taken all the medals.

Natalia Zabolotnaya clearly followed her lifting plan and all of her lifts looked easy - if the competition would have been harder, she would most likely have done more.

The lovely Lidia Valentin was really good at snatch making her new record but the competition wasn't over yet. In clean and jerk she managed to do only one good lift and she lost her second position. Real shame, I wonder what went wrong.

A bit off-topic but just crossed my mind, how Alla Vazhenina has unorthodox bodytype for olympic lifter; she is quite tall to be 75 kg lifter - 175 cm - and she seems to have long limbed bodytype. Usually this category lifter are about 160-168 cm tall. Interesting anecdote that she was Russian citizen, but often failed to attend Russian national team, so she changed to Kazakstan and took silver in olympics.

Well, that was it. Shame I couldn't import more visual material, but I guess this is better than nothing.

This year World champis will be as late as 17.11.2009-29.11.2009.

I don't pretend to know many, if any, of the lifters you are writing about, Maitolasi, but your dedication to recording the details is to be applauded.

Well that's my point exactly here; trying to bring up something in which all are not so familiar with.
