1  General Topics / Fandom & Nerd Stuff / Re: Why aren't there more female characters in action movies/games? on: Apr 22, 2007, 01:34 PM
I think that the idea remains - despite the fact that demographic surveys comprehensively prove it to have been false since 2000 and becoming more inaccurate as time passes - that the majority of gamers are adolescent boys... and I think after the Tomb Raider franchise lost its way, the pneumatic females fell out of favour and so we returned to the grizzly bad asses... I'm sure we'll have another round of Croftets in a while.

I think thats a good assesment, and I know exactly what you mean.  With each generation more and more girls are playing games, but the 00s were way more male orientated than the 90s I think in terms of movie heroes and game heroes.  Then again the 90s were alot more progressive... Anyway, I'd like to see some grizzly female action too though, Its so rare to see a big gal on screen or in game in a positive light (though I know they do exist, the very few occurancs for is just not enough. Smiley )

I think part of it is the demographic games are targeted for, although some recent games have had female protagonists. Bullet Witch (on Xbox360) is one example (and it's a pretty fun game, too).

I was really interested in bullet witch, it was actually one of the reasons I bought an xbox, but it got such bad reviews, so I stayed away from it.  Were the reviews just biased?  This week I finally bought perfect dark zero, and the girl at the counter warned me that it was the worst game ever made on the 360 and many people had returned it in disgust.  I took it home, and I've been playing it ever since.  I like it better than any other shooter including gears of war.  But I seriously wonder if some folks can't have fun playing as a female character...

Don't worry, once I get a chance to produce my movie I fully intend to have a muscular female protagnist doing some massive damage to the enemy.  Sci-Fi fantasy movie I had finished the script to a few years ago, just need to figure out how to make it happen.

I would watch that and buy a copy of the DVD for all of my friends!  It would be nice, considering every other time I see a female bodybuilder on screen she's usually being used as a grotesque oddity (like in the cell or that axe commercial).

It seems rather odd to me, especially when considering sci-fi.  Now I know that there are action films with female characters, but I feel that they are few and far between, and I am usually disappointed in thier performance on screen when the action comes because they are hardly ever depicted doing any real damage to the "enemy".  With the fact that many militaries already have fighting women in combat today, why are the militaries of sci-fi so male dominated?

Finally they are taking her more seriously in the muscle department.  I've always hated the supermodel with greatsword tradition.  It just doesn't happen like that.  We already have to suspend our disbelief at her chainmail bikini, lol.

Sexy and scary all at once!  Good work. Smiley

Impressive.

I think she's impressively scary in a sexy way...  Forgive me, I inherited Norwegian humor.  Thanks for the comments though!
