I believe this question fits in with this forum. Has anybody read/heard anything more about the research on myostatin and supplements that may suppress this growth factor that regulates muscle growth? Is anybody using some of the new products that are supposed to act on myostatin? If so how is it working? :?

I read an article where they say myostatin inhibitors actually overload the body's natural inhibitors to the extent that they cancel each other out. Don't remember where though.

I've actually tried Myostim....  I seemed to gain strength but not really any size.  I've stopped lifting for now and I stopped taking it.  Until I get my diet right, I'm not even going to try anything like that again.

--edit--
think I worded that wrong.  I'm not going to try it again.  A proper diet should be all that's necissary.  ^^;

I's, on principle and from training, do not trust suppliments or the like. I's trust products such as Msostim even less. Not from personal experience but from obsavation of people who use it.
Many make little or few gains, most make none and a seldom few do improve but not by much.
Personally, I's would use a proper diet plan and natural suppliments (such as herbs, vitimans, tonics, etc) rather than other such bodybuilding suppliments.
When I's return from this latest journey, I's shall endeavor to locate, translate and post my's note from my's days of training.
But, for you, dear luvmuslgirls, I'swoudl recommending finding people that you know who have used Myostim and see what they have to say. Ask a wide corss-section as not to get one sided views of the matter.
Best of luck to thee.
Peace

There is scientific basis for this, in both mice and one known human, see these articles:

http://www.thinkmuscle.com/articles/volk/myostatin.htm

http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20040626/fob5.asp

An oral supplement to supress a gene has so far not become possible, gene therapy is an invasive process requiring the highest technology medical equipment and lots and lots of money, because of these reasons current myostatin research is focusing on the benefits it can have on Muscular Dystrophy patients, a muscle wasting disease, and so far Myostatin is ONE of the MANY proteins involved in the suppression of muscle growth in MD patients.  Suppressing one protein of many, will have very little effect on overal skeletal muscle growth...Sorry but that's the reality and science of it.  Read this article as well:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mohr28.htm

Reality, however, won't stop us from using this possibility for inhuman muscle growth in women, it may even allow women to break through their natural plateau and achieve muscularity on the order of men, and beyond!  or Myostatin suppression would, for some reason, only work in women, making them the new muscle overlords or, well I could go on all day...

I want to thank you all for your responses and advice. I didn't know if this topic was of any interest to anybody else. Hmm...Myostim sounds more like creatine. I will look it up. And yeah, I felt it is WAY too early in myostatin research to hope for any real breakthroughs. I've read what I can find on the topic. I thought maybe some of you had learned more.

But you're all right that diet and exercise are props the only means we have today for muscle strengthening and growth, unless you're into the "juice", which I'm definitely not. I do believe some supplements are useful such as a good protein powder or drink and vitamins/minerals.
I know adequate sleep is essential for repair and recovery from training since it IS known hormones are released during the REM part of the sleep cycle.

I am a past forty male and my testosterone level has been shown as very low. I've also been looking for natural testosterone enhancers/stimulators, either naturally occurring in food or a good supplement if any exists. Or is this something else I need to put on my 'wishlist'.

Thanks

As said before, some are known and shall be reposted when they are found and translated.
This, unfortunately, may take sometime as I's am currently in South-East Asia and shall soon be heading for the Middle East.
Good luck until then.
Peace
