Hmm, retrospective flash backs were something I considered.

The thing with the friend - that was going to be later on. I had imagined it as a pretty long story. Covering maybe a few years. It would probably start at the end of her first year, with her thinking back to her first change.

As to the motivations and so on - that's really all in my head... I tend to write stories in a bit of a strange way. I tend to create stories based on an idea - often a single scene. I'll then fly by the seat of my pants and hope that it works out as a story.

Thus far, it's worked

But anyway, as I've said - at the moment, I really can't write this. I'd love to help someone else do it though. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.
