AlexG brought this artist to my attention in his post a few days ago about an item for sale on eBay by an artist named Daikon (eBay id:tamagoland).  The guy has got a pretty interesting style and seems to draw mostly comic book and game characters.  I dug around eBay and have rehosted some of these pics at ImageShack since some of them are gone now that the auctions have ended.  I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for his stuff in the future:

If a Japanese animation studio wanted to do anime versions of Marvel or DC characters, this is the guy they should hire for the character designs. I'd prefer these to the Bruce Timm versions.

I've seen this style before -- in that Metroid manga from a few years back, and also in the ending pics of Metroid Fusion.

I wouldn't be surprised a bit if it were the same guy. There tends to be significant overlap between professional manga artists and fan artists.

According to Daikon's blog (Tamagoland) some created a website dedicated to his artwork.  In addition, he had a few rounds of artwork on eBay in the last few months.  His Photobucket account still has most of them up there, including this NSFW topless drawing of his Amazon character that you don't want to miss.
