Just realized- I have included a smoking character in one of my serial novels.  Lisette Boudreaux, Phil's, Dicey's, and Dasia's grandmother of the calculating and scheming sort, is a smoker.

A secondary corollary to this would be whether or not the inclusion or the refusal to do so in a story isn't culturally driven depending upon what area of the world you call home.   Cool

For example, given the dogmatic anti-smoking propaganda in the United States I would assume that someone from here would be less inclined then someone from Europe, South America or Asia - but then again maybe not.  Huh

But since America is the land of free and the home of the brave aren't you more likely to find a rugged individualist ready to buck the trend?  Roll Eyes

Alex,

In my story ‘A Love Refined’, I have my character smoking a cigarette when pushed into a corner.  While its not a central theme or motif, I used it because I wanted to illustrate how beleaguered she was having been faced by the prospect of being attracted to a FBB. I guess some could say it is a sign of weakness and uncertainty.  I leave that up to the reader to determine.

Maybe it was directed at me at that Roll Eyes  I do seem to be the only one who's included a major character (non villain) who smokes more than occasionally.  Yes, being a maverick is good.  And I know I'm in good company Wink

While I don't write stories per se, I write comics and role plays..
I myself don't smoke.
But yeah.
For one, my Lu smokes.

I suppose to me it expresses that not every character is 'good' or 'bad', and they need have flaws and sometimes bad habits just like real people, to seem more plausible.
I don't think smoking is a big deal, it just adds realism, in my opinion- if your whole universe isn't made of cookie cutter good girls and bad guys.
