Of course, you
have to be from L.A. for the script to be good enough to win the Grand Prize!

I dunno about that - one of the things they noted in the award announcement is that Joel is a native of Cranston, RI, so the organizers were very pleased that a "native son" won (or co-won, as the case may be) the Grand Prize. (And no, I don't think Joel's RI origins helped us win - there had to have been numerous other submissions from Rhode Island natives, some of whom I'm sure still live there.)
CONGRATULATIONS! It's a sign of the times that a fantasy genre script won the top prize!
What's funny about that is that I honestly didn't think we had a chance of winning
any prize (much less the Grand Prize) precisely
because our screenplay was a fantasy effort. These types of scripts (nor the movies made from them) rarely win at film festivals (unless the festival itself is dedicated to fantasy, sci-fi, and horror). So winning was as much a shock ("They chose a
fantasy script??") as a surprise ("OMG we won!!").
Now sell that bad boy!
Believe me, we'll be doing our best!
