I've been wondering this for some time now and I'm curious to know if anyone would be interested in joining together to procure and produce new commissioned artwork, whether pin-ups, sequences or animations.

The basic concept is simple enough:
On a regular or semi-regular basis, a poll of sort is created to decide what kind of artwork would be commissioned. After a certain period, a decision would be taken and people would decide if they're in or out. An artist would contacted to complete the commissioned artwork and the bill would be divided between those who decided to get in. Rinse. Repeat.

That's a very rough draft and I have something much cleaner in mind, but first I'd just like to know if I'm the only one who would be interested in such a project.

Let me know.

176 views and not a single comment? Guess nobody's interested.

Mods, you can deleted this thread, there's no need to clutter the forums needlessly.

I think the reason there aren't many responses is because, no one really knows what's going on.

Whose going to pay the artist?

How does the money get divied up?

How do you deal with international currencies, since artists come from all over the world?

Who will continue to keep paying the artists if the original person does not have the funds, or do not wish to pay?

How will payment be handled?  Paypal?  Checks?  Money order?

Maybe with a bit more clarity some responses could be garnered.

Whose going to pay the artist?

Everyone. That's the point: to allow a group of people to join together and share out the cost of a commissioned piece of artwork. The fact is that many, if not most of us, can't enjoy quality custom artwork. It's just too expensive. Buying such artwork as a group would be an easy way to reduce the basic cost. An 100$ pin-up is something you can usually afford only once in a while. But if the price is reduced to 10$ because there's 9 other people buying, it's much more of a bargain.

How does the money get divied up?

Equally between the buyers, where the buyers are everyone who decided to join up for a certain commission. You don't have to join up if you don't like what'S being proposed for a certain commission. Sometime you can have 20 buyers and sometime you can have only five. That's what you agree to when you join up.

How do you deal with international currencies, since artists come from all over the world?

PayPal is the obvious choice here, taking care of all international considerations.

Who will continue to keep paying the artists if the original person does not have the funds, or do not wish to pay?

The group of buyers. Of course trust is very important here and bad payers would quickly get blacklisted by other fellow buyers. If the artist produce the artwork, the group has to pay. It's that simple. If (let's say), three people refuse to pay, the other buyers have to pick up the bill. And if nobody is willing or able to do so, then the project leader for a certain commission is the one responsible.

How will payment be handled?  Paypal?  Checks?  Money order?

Again PayPal would probably be the easiest way to this. Most everyone had access to a Credit Card and it's fairly easy for an artist to set things up on his side. As far as how payment would be handled, some arrangement would have to be taken between the buyers and the artist. As someone who's paid for a few thousand dollars in commissions in the past, I can say that most often it's 50% up front and 50% once the artwork is completed.

Of course, let's keep in mind that this is a very rough draft. That's why it's important for people interested in such a concept to discuss it at length.

Eh, that's going to be a deal breaker for me.  When it comes to getting the community actively involved in something like this, it doesn't really pan out well.  Having seen this iteration multiple times before I know for a fact that this community is not one that often shells out money.  People didn't want to pay 5 dollars just to read a Jane of the Jungle comic, it was only 5 dollars!

So to get artists who have busy schedules, get a small amount of money, unreliable amount of income hoping that people in a community will pay up.

No I don't think so, this idea is just not something that will do well around here.

I'm with TC.

People have tried this before and it didn't work.

Also....people's tastes are so radically different, at least one person is going to be dissatisfied.

This idea is very much like a small press comics coloration. Those can be notoriously difficult to make work even when all the parties involved are willing to work for free. With money on the table, it's going to be tough, to nearly impossible, to make this work. If by some miracle you can pull this off, you'll be nigh unto a god in this community.  Wink
