What hurts the most is that comment was made by someone involved in comic books.

However, the guys do bring up a point. A lot of female comic characters (She Hulk included) look like porn stars because they are drawn sexy, busty and curvy. You rarely find women in comics of different body types. I understand why they are drawn that way. Comics are/were made by males for males. Also, this is fantasy and most guys probably don’t want unattractive women in their fantasies.

With that said, I wouldn’t describe She-Hulk as “chunky” or refer to her as “Slut-Hulk”.

Some good point. I think they stereotype curvy as slutty.
    We need curvy acceptance.

The subsequent comments to the article were also interesting to read.

My response to Goyer’s comments is one thing. “Blade III”. If that Superman-Batman movie flops he may find himself knocking on Marvel Studios door for a job.

HELLO time to jump in I guess with FEMINISM. Real feminism and not straw feminism. Also, disclaimer, not calling any of yous guys out but just wanted to give like a good arguable point of view on why his comments are bad for other reasons.

Saying that the She-Hulk is basically just a sexy Hulk to sell comics to teens is a weird thing. It objectifies her. A lot of us on here have read Shulkie comics and you’ve probably noticed that some of them are really fucking good; she’s an excellent, three-dimensional character with agency who is not defined by being a good-looking lady. She was breaking the fourth wall long before Deadpool.

When it comes to the shape of women in comics, you can easily dish out the line “sex sells”. However while it may slightly increase sales to the male population you’re excluding more women who find it uncomfortable.

(N.B. Of course this gets fudged a bit with dudes not comfortable with it, gay ladies liking it, etc, but in general)

Why exclude half(/see above note) the population to try and sell a few more to guys? Because girls don’t read comics? Maybe they would if the Hawkeye Initiative didn’t exist.

I guess that’s a little off-topic there but wanted to cover my bases.

And yeah I know the irony of me posting this whole spiel on a forum where we look at and talk about buff ladies. There’s nothing wrong with being attracted to buff women (I feel that message is lost sometimes) and to a degree we’re probably doing good by promoting healthier women! I guess we should all just be aware of the sub-concious effects of STUFF.

Why would you get flamed budoka?

I think everyone that posted in this thread is in agreement that She-Hulk isn’t a giant green pornstar.

In fact, despite the forum being a focus for strong, sexy, women, it doesn’t mean that all of us just want to lust after these buff ladies. I think it’s safe to say that a majority of the people on this forum are pro-women and though we may share scandalous thoughts from time to time, we in no way mean to objectify, dehumanize, or insult women.

This forum has always been about two things:

1.) Sharing news about muscular women in media. (What you do with that information is your own business)

2.) Promoting a feminism agenda that gives power back to the ladies. Well, maybe not feminism, but we’re just simply against taking away power from women.

So, no, I don’t think you’ll be getting flamed anytime soon.

THANK YOU, it’s just a contentious topic really. Especially on the internet. I’m glad you agree!

I think the reaction to Goyer’s comments was much ado about nothing. His (admittedly poorly-worded) attempt at being witty and snarky (read: entertaining) for a comic book-related podcast should have been taken with a grain of salt. (Sorry about all the aphorisms here, folks, bear with.) The real controversy here is that since he is a person working at the higher levels of mainstream Hollywood productions, his opinions/off-hand comments are given artificial value.

The “journalists” who glom on to every random thing that entertainment industry players say to create “news” know exactly what they’re doing—pursuing a career.

The hand-wringing over Goyer’s capacity to ruin the integrity of portrayals of women in genre movies because he said something icky is not what feminism is (was) about.

The subsequent proferring of Stan Lee’s opinion on the matter is laughable. Like he gives a shit.

Also the way how i see this is that it also depends on how the female character is portrayed. If you take the Avengers film and Winter Soldier, Black Widow is a pretty cool character I thought and was portrayed to be badass without coming off as just being another sexy character. So to me it really comes down to portrayal. if She Hulk does appear in the second avengers film for example AND is portrayed to be badass, strong and independent, then I think that may change some people’s opinions and perceptions.
