Where is the best place to rent a car in Phuket?

    We are flying to Phuket for a vacation at the beginning of next year, and it will be our first time in Thailand. Since I am used to driving everywhere myself, I think it will be more convenient to get around by car there as well. Where is it better to rent a car on the island? Should we go with official rental companies, or can we find something decent from private owners too?

    I would recommend private owners. It is almost always easier to deal with them no matter where you travel. Traditional rental agencies tend to have lots of conditions and requirements, and the big security deposit is especially annoying since that money could be spent on your trip instead. Private owners also offer a wider range of cars, so you can even find something familiar to us Americans like a Ford or a Chrysler.
