Welcome to the wave club! The biggest mistake people make with natural wavy hair is treating it exactly like tight curls. Waves have a looser cuticle pattern, meaning they don’t need nearly as much heavy moisture or thick oils. Skip the heavy shea butters and deep conditioning creams entirely. Instead, use a lightweight, silicone-free conditioner and apply a dime-sized amount of a liquid leave-in spray. While your natural wavy hair is still dripping wet, scrunch in a flexible-hold styling foam, mousse, or lightweight polymer gel to help lock in the pattern. Use a microfiber towel to gently micro-scrunch out excess water instead of rubbing it dry, which destroys definition. Let it air dry completely or use a diffuser on low heat, and absolutely do not touch it until it is one hundred per cent dry to prevent frizz. Once dry, if it feels slightly stiff, gently scrunch the hair one last time to break the gel cast, leaving you with soft, touchable, and bouncy waves.
