KeymasterHere's another in a long line of stupid research studies:
Drowning risk highest for black males
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Swimming-pool drowning cases involve a disproportionate number of black boys and young adults, and public pools appear to be the primary danger zone, U.S. government researchers have found.
In one of the most extensive studies to look at the issue, investigators found that nearly half of the swimming-pool drownings they tracked occurred among African Americans – with males being at particular risk.
The findings, published in the American Journal of Public Health, not only confirm past research showing that a large number of young drowning victims are African American, but also identify where these deaths are happening.
Nationally, between 1995 and 1998, 51 percent of drownings among blacks ages 5 to 24 happened in a public pool. Most often, it was a hotel or motel pool. That stands in contrast to white children and young adults, 55 percent of whom drowned in a residential pool.
It's not clear why young African Americans, males in particular, are more likely than other racial groups to drown. But the new findings point to the places where prevention efforts are most needed, according to the investigators, led by Dr. Gitanjali Saluja of the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Hotel and motel pools, they point out, often lack lifeguards. So it's vital for children to always have an adult with them.
The study findings are based on federal data for 678 swimming-pool drownings among 5- to 24-year-olds between 1995 and 1998.
Overall, three-quarters of the victims were male, and black males were at greatest risk. Their rate of drowning was anywhere from 5 to 12 times higher than that of white males, depending on the age group. Hispanic males were also at greater risk than whites, but the difference was much smaller…

KeymasterWell, anyone can drown, that's true.
The way it was explained to me when I took a lifesaving course, in hushed tones because it's considered forbidden knowledge, is that white kids and blacks kids are about equally likely to get intro trouble in water deeper than their heads. The difference, I was told, is that whites have higher bodyfat and lower bone mass, so they are more buoyant. So when a white kid gets into trouble, he'll often manage to stay at the surface long enough to get someone's attention, whereas a black kid who gets in trouble in the water may quickly and quietly dip below the surface, unobserved. We were told to keep a particularly close eye on black kids in the water, not because they were more likely to get into trouble, but because once in trouble, their situation was liable to deteriorate rapidly.
The point is it's one of those things everybody knows – like white guys not being able to dance – that we simply chalk up to folk wisdom and don't attempt to validate. When we start validating these things we're left with solid "truthy" blocks of racial differences that propl can build a much larger structure of bigotry upon.

ParticipantAs with most thinks in existence, it has more to do with oppotunity than genetics.
In American Inner City schools, which have a high Black and ethnic population, they do not have the funding or facilities to teach swimming to their students and thus have little oppotunity to learn from a young age.
This transfers to teenage and adult life because since they lack the oppotinuties and places to go swimming, they are not as practiced as their White Middle Class counterparts.
American Blacks also suffer the social stigma to venture to such places as pools and beaches because of the racial (mis)conceptions held by society and their own installed issues.Of course, their physology has a minor part to play but if you were to venture to any coastal regions of Africa, especially areas where many of men make a living as fishermen, you would find that they are quite naturla and powerful swimmers.
If the statement about muscle mass verse natural body fat were true, than Asians would not be as good swimmers as they have proven to be. Because they have naturally less body fat than your average White European and have denser muscles when they are delevoped.
And no snide remarks about the drug use by the Chinese female swimming team. For not all are as such.I's do not believe in Racial Stigma.
We are all born of the Human Race and should see each other as equals beyond the mere shading of our surfaces. That is all.
Peace

KeymasterOh, come on, man. The distribution of specific racial excellence in certain sports makes it pretty obvious that there's something genetic in play. Examples: Most of the players in the NBA are black – most of the players in ML Baseball are white. In track and field, nearly all of the best sprinters are black, and nearly all of the long distance runners are white (or East African).
You might have a case with higher-cost sports like hockey, but for relatively cheap-to-play sports there's not much justification for an economic paradigm. And since minority-dominated schools in the U.S. have had access to substantially increased sports funding over the last 25 years or so, the case for economics weakens even more.

ParticipantI's did have a feeling that you would use the notion of sports as a counter, dear Lingster, so I's do offer a simple maxim:
"We one fights to win, it is one thing. when they fight to survive it is another".
For many sports are their only means and methods to escape their economic cycle. Thus they try harder in order to gain recognition they need to step up to the high level of Collegic and Professional sports.
History has soon that as oppotunity increases, so do the percentages of non-Whites achieving.
That is why you are finding many of the top players in American Professional Basket Ball and Baseball are either from an Black, Ethnic or Foreign background.
Because they have more to prove once they are given the oppotunities to do so.As for minority-dominated schools in the U.S. having access to more sports funding, that is merely a moot point.
These schools realise that their better option is to develop sports talent in order to attract more funding, usually at the cost of acedemic programs.
And thus the cycle remains. Is am not denying that genetics plays its part but you must also factor in the conditioning of grouping.
When people are giving the oppotunity to do a thing that they were previously not, their chances of suceeding over others whom having been doing it for long simply because they have more to prove by doing so and far more to gain.Peace
