I had totally missed the rash of stateside school shootings in the news in the past couple of weeks. When I checked my e-mail in a Hong Kong coffeeshop just now, though… I didn't expect THIS:

I know sometimes MY kids make me wish I had heat, but geez! 🙁
What do y'all make of it?
Well, there's certainly an argument to be made in favor of having a few armed employees in a school – where security guards are not available or feasible, administrators or teachers might serve as good replacements.
It seems likely that the gunman in Pennsylvania specifically chose an Amish school because the Amish are pacifists and would be neither willing nor able to resist him. On the whole, though, this problem is statistically extremely rare and school security is miles ahead of where it was prior to Columbine. I'm more worried about a Beslan-type scenario, and three or four teachers with handguns would be of little use in preventing something on that scale.
I’ll echo the sentiment that these kind of shootings are quite rare, and when they do take place usually happen in areas where resistance, armed or otherwise, is unlikely.
