Do any of you use MALE bodybuilders as reference for making female muscle art? Because I heard some femuscle artists do.
Nicely Done!
I don't use refferences (at least not anymore or usually), so I can't give you an answer.
I don't think it would make any sense. If you're aiming for realistic anatomy, there are just too many differences between the sexes. There are enough photos of womwn BB's floating around the web for you to be able to find references for any body type or body muscle level you might need.
All the time.
Generally I use it for references of muscular definition, size, and shape, since male bodybuilders are bigger than their female counterparts. Sometimes, the way a man carries themselves is also usable for an fbb. If I see a pic of a male bb and I can use it in a pic, I do. That said, the influence of a male bb on one of my pics, is generally minor.
I have looked at male bodybuilders for reference in the past- both for drawing muscular males as well as for getting details for female muscle- mostly in the arms.
But I can't remember the last time I had to do so, since, as Yatz says, you can find pictures of all levels of female muscularity online.
my style isn't so realistic to need so see difference ^^'''
personally i've always seen only fbb photos, and i make them bigger 😛
I make quite realistic women and i prefer use pics of real women. There are so many on the web and ME mags, i don't need to use pics of guys.
Back before the Internet, when pics of bigger women were hard to come by, I'd occasionally use a photo of a male BB (especially for vascularity). And I based one picture – this NSFW Tetsuko pic – on a guy in that pose, and used the lighting and vascularity from that photo. (I like to think that I didn't make Tet-chan herself look too much like a guy ;D) But now, as several before me have commented, the availability of FBB photos on the 'net (and the bigger women in the sport in general) have all but eliminated the need to use male BBs as reference.
I use whatever I need. If a photograph of a male bodybuilder's arm shows the angle I want to draw, I use it–with no qualms over using a guy's body to draw a girl. As far as these fantasy drawings go, to me, muscle is muscle–although I wouldn't use a "macho man's" overall body (especially the body language) to draw a coquette…
I referenced a photo of male bodybuilder Ralf Moeller's arms (is "Ralf Moeller" a bodybuilder? I think that was his name) to draw this She-Hulk, and naturally, only the "mesomorph-phobes" at a mainstream comics art site complained.
If I do use a modern-day female bodybuilder photo reference, I try to change/add enough to the drawing to make the source less obvious.
