Strong women in a mainstream scifi story & series

    Specifically, I want to recommend the collection of short stories Borders of Infinity by Lois McMaster Bujold- all three of the stories depict exceptionally strong women in various ways, as does the entire Vorkosigan series.  The story I suspect most on Amaz0ns would enjoy is called Labyrinth and introduces an amazingly powerful genetically engineered woman.

    If anyone has any questions about the series- what books fall into the series, what books best fill the amaz0n criteria, etc- drop me a line and I'll be happy to expound on their merits for you.

    Those are awesome- I had not seen those before.  The last one is clearly a painting of a scene in Labyrinth…

    Wow, those cover are really… pulp! And so very different from the American covers.

    Nice post…. Yes, Taura=Nine was one of my favourite SciFi characters as well.

    While not as powerful or muscular as she is, I can think of another
    serious Sci-Fi novel series that features big, strong, women.

    Honor Harrington series by David Weber is starred by a Genetically
    modified woman, and some of the novels are populated by even bigger
    and more muscular women ("Crown of Slaves", for example).

    Have anyone else read this series? If so, what's your comments?

    Yes, I'm a big fan of David Weber. I love Honor, as well as "Great Kaja" and her squad. He also has a fantasy series (Bazhell) with a formidable female warrior in it. Almost all his female characters are to be respected for thier intelligence as well as thier lethality.

    Honor does stand out, though, if only for the fact that he's written more about her than anyone else. She's a brilliant tactician, devastating in hand-to-hand combat (re. the attempted assination of Protector Benjamin), and absolutly deadly with a pistol, killing a man with her first shot, and putting six more into him before he hit the ground (he really shouldn't have killed her boyfriend). Her genetic modifications (which she inherited from her father) were intended to make her more suitable for heavy gravity plantes, and she regularly ups the artifical gravity to 2G when she works out.

    But she's much more than a killing machine. She's embarrased by her notariaty(sp?), incredibly caring of her friends and underlings, grieves for her dead, and, luckily for the male population, doesn't take after her mother.
