This is not a joke.
This morning, my church continued its study of the book of 1 Peter, chapter 3, and the message was on husbands and wives, and how they should love each other. This week, the sermon was aimed at husbands, current and future.
The emphasis was on verse 7: "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."
Now on "weaker partner," the speaker said that the original Greek was referring to females strictly in the bodily sense, and emphasized that women in general were smaller and less muscular than men. He did say that yes, there were women that were taller than the average, and that any Olympic female weightlifter was probably stronger than any one guy in the congregation. But… their male counterparts would be even taller and stronger than that.
And for that reason, in keeping with men loving their wives it was never okay for a husband to strike a wife. EVER.
He then reflected on domestic violence cases in China. He said that a policeman friend of his had heard many domestic abuse cases, many men would argue back: "She hit me first!" or "She provoked me into it!"
Then the speaker said, "Well… what about this… what if in this case, as soon as the husband hit the wife… she then became six feet, four inches tall, and 250 pounds heavy? And she takes a shot at his teeth?"
After a beat he added, "If that were the case, I bet any arguing husband would learn some self-control in a hurry."
And with that, he said, if she ever gets that angry, just simply hold her arms down to her sides, or just leave the house until she cools down.
Glad I didn't sleep through THAT one. 🙂 I'll see if I can get a written transcript or mp3 of the sermon as soon as the church puts it up on their website.
And for that reason, in keeping with men loving their wives it was never okay for a husband to strike a wife. EVER.
Better not say that to these people. (Disclaimer: I have not been able to determine whether this site is a hoax or not.)
