Am I the only one creeped out a little?
Maughan Wellham, from Thornton in NSW, competed in the All Female Natural Muscle and Fitness Classic in Melbourne last weekend, the Herald Sun reports.
The bikini-wearing tween was given her own category due to her young age.
July 17, 2008 at 6:10 pm #73542LingsterKeymasterCreepy. Hard to say because we don't know what the reporter left out, but based on what she didn't mention it seems the mother completely missed the problems with exhibitionism and sexualizing a 10-year-old.
July 17, 2008 at 9:40 pm #73543Michael PouliotParticipantsexualization…isn't that specific to the fetish shared by members of this board? BB may be about aesthetics, but it's not about "erotic" aesthetics. In fact, I think having a 10 year-old compete in a BB contest is a step up from a 10-year old competing in a beauty contest…and that happens all the time.
July 18, 2008 at 4:14 am #73544MaxxCParticipantReminds of the Victoria Larvies and Richard Sandraks. Generally, I am against any kids under 16 competing only because if they get into the sport and they get to serious about it then they may be exposed to the darker side of the sport too soon.
Besides, why put all that pressure like that on a kid? Besides, even if the kid and parent didn't take the competition seriously why go for all that attention? Seems there's ulterior motives here.
July 18, 2008 at 5:12 pm #73545SnowLeopardTaurParticipantI'm curious, do they have 10-year old boys participating in bodybuilding competitions? I do agree with i_am_not_herbert that this isn't necessarily sexual, it seems much more like she's participating it as a sport rather than a pageant. I don't see it as creepy at all, as long as it's approached from an athletic perspective.
July 18, 2008 at 6:31 pm #73546nic2800ParticipantChildren play many sports at 10 years and younger. It sounds like the girl likes it. I don't think a parent would be able to get a kid to train well if the child was being forced into this.
I don't see it as a sexual thing. How many other activities can have a girl in skimpy or questionable clothing. cheerleading, swimming, beauty pagents, and others.
My biggest concern is the training. I understand that heavy weight training can be harsh on a pre-teen. I don't know if this is true though.

I really don't want to seem rude, but is it too much to ask to read the linked article before passing judgement? The mother did categorically state that no weights were used.
I still consider it wrong, though. Perhaps not so much from the sexualisation perspective but from the body image/narcissistic viewpoint. Presumably this girl had to diet in order to show the muscle she had.

How do you know I didn't read the article and that I'm just making a general comment on children and any hard training.
I may have made a poor choice of terms but meant to point out many activities that are not for children.
I've been around here on this board for a while. I usually don't speak out about things unless they make me concerned about an issue.
Sorry if it came out wrong.
July 19, 2008 at 12:33 am #73549nic2800ParticipantI want to point out a couple more things that are in my head about this.
With all the kids that sit around with a game controller in their hands weighing 30 or more pound above what they should. It is kind of nice to hear of one that wants to be in shape.
Have we seen a picture of her stage-wear? Is this in the same area as Miley Cyrus and her Vanity Fair pics?
Have you ever seen some of the grown up ways some mothers dress their kids for pagents or acting jobs?
I think we should all study this more before any of us pass judgement.
