Shelley Beattie

Just a little tribute for Shelley Beattie, aka Siren from the original American Gladiators TV show.
Shelley was born in 1967. She became deaf at a very young age, and because of that she had problems communicating with her classmates at school.
This led to ridicule from others and she became a loner, deciding to devote herself to athletics and she became easily the best girl athlete at her school, excelling at track and field events.
Because of her strength and athletism she became a star of the American Gladiators in the early ’90s, but even that could’nt mask the fact that beneath her smile, Siren was depressed and was diagnosed with having bi-polar disease. This went on for years.
Siren hung herself in Feb. 2008 and died in the hospital as medics tried to rescue her from her self-inflicted injury.
I’ve always wondered what drives someone to commit suicide but in Siren’s case, just a nice deaf girl who could not fit in in her life.
She’s just another tormented soul and should not be forgotten. -Robert
