HBO to develop “Muscle”

“Muscle” on HBO

This came across my desk at work.

“Valentine’s” Cianfrance To Build Up “Muscle”
Hunting Lane Films is showing some “Muscle,” launching development of a series for HBO based on Sam Fussell’s bodybuilding memoir, with “Blue Valentine” writer-director Derek Cianfrance attached. “Muscle” is the first project from Hunting Lane’s new development fund for features budgeted between $6 million and $20 million along with scripted TV projects. “Muscle” is set up in partnership with John Lesher and Adam Kassan’s Le Grisbi Prods. Lesher and Kassan will exec produce alongside Hunting Lane CEO Jamie Patricof. Fussell’s book, first published two decades ago, recounts his four-year immersion in the bodybuilding life. Fussell and Cianfrance will pen the script and serve as co-exec producers.

Fussell wrote his book in 1992 titled Muscle: Confessions of an Unlikely Bodybuilder.

He’s an intellectual who got into the sport because he was curious. Apparently, he got into it enough to get on stage a number of times.

My understanding is that the series will be a comedy.

I have not read the book but intend to so as to get an idea of how our sport may be portrayed in this series.

It’s been many yrs since I last read his book, so I could be an error here, but I seem to recall that he had a relationship with a FBBr in it.

However, given the penchant for the mainstream putting down FBBing, if there are any portrayals of them in this series I don’t imagine that they will be too kind to the subject of women and bodybuilding.

On the other hand, you never know.
