ParticipantHey, guys, I was modifying the links to my Power Play chapters so readers could hop from one to the next more easily… but hit a hitch when I tried to Chapter 3.
There's now a 20000 character limit, and my chapter exceeds it. (And so do the others following, since they get longer and longer.)
😐 Any suggestions?

ParticipantThe answer is simple:
Divide the story and post it in as many sections as is warrented but all within the same thread.
Hope this doth help.
Peace

KeymasterOh, crud. I should have thought of that.
By how much does it exceed the limit?

ParticipantNot sure. I looked at another forum which said to have had a character counter, but I couldn't find it.
I was able to link chapters one and two without worries, so they made the 20 K limit, no problem. Does that give any help?

KeymasterWell, I can make it anything, but there are good reasons for having a practical limit. I don't know the code very well, but I'm guessing that SMF doesn't "like" to have very large posts to pull out of the database – it lengthens the connection time and probably slows down other tasks. Your stories are certainly good enough to be in the archive, where documents are only loaded once an hour and then cached, drastically cutting database load. So I'll double the size to 40000, but I hope you'll take me up on the offer to start putting your stories in the archive, instead of the forum.

ParticipantThing is, I kinda welcome the feedback, advice, and kudos I get from other readers. I like to know what I'm doing wrong and right when I present the writings in the forum.
Meanwhile, I thought I'd sent you a PM giving the OK to put Power Play into the archive earlier. I still do.

ParticipantWhy don't you upload the stories to the archive and post a link to your story in here whenever you do?
This way, your story gets uploaded, we get to be entertained, and you receive about 1.2% of the accolades that you deserve!

I can do that, but my goal is to give people the ability to post their own stories to the content management system, and then act as editor. Muscle Growth Fan is using the CMS to manage his cartoon sightings, I'm using it to blog, Marknew is using it to post stories…we're definitely moving in the right direction. It's extremely flexible, and can support a large number of creative users.
And there's nothing that would prevent you from starting a forum thread or permitting people to add comments to the end of the story.

ParticipantOookay… At risk of seeming like a TOTAL idiot… I went ahead and entered Power Play Chapter 1 with an intro text paragraph over at Library/User Menu/Submit. Have I done it right?

I'd say if you have 20,000 characters in your story, you'd have to trim your cast down a bit. I mean, come on, even Charles Dickens didn't put that many characters in his stories. One main character, maybe a couple of side characters, should do it for this audience.
…
I'll save you the trouble…
