ParticipantI believe that the Olympia contests want so much to have the one best athlete of the genereation to win the contest that they over look the other competetors, some of which have better physiques, so that the reining "top dog" can keep their crown.
There numerous women that I felt should have won the olympia at least once but never have or ever will do to the politics of the sport.

ParticipantOn the figure side, is it just me, or did Lenay Hernandez deserve to finish a lot higher than 11th? I'm no judge, but in the pictures at Muscular Development–

–she was the woman who most made me go Whoa!
Fortunately, she gets plenty of love from Google, too.

This is very true, however Kim Chizevsky started becoming one of those "topdog" winners and in 1999 she won, and by that time she was clearly one of the most muscular MS Olympia that I have ever seen. Look up Kim on Youtube and perhaps you can see s clip of her at her most muscular.
But for the most part you are right. I remember when Lenda Murray won over Denise Rutkowski, Denise should have clearly won, but they wanted Lenda to have her reign. That set back the sport, and had an influence in Denise being so disappointed that she chose to never compete again. A shame.

Based on a quick glance, all I can guess is that they felt her glutes and hamstrings were too soft, and that, maybe, she shows too much calf size for the new, ridiculous, Figure judging criteria.

ParticipantGuys, come on! Iris clearly had the most complete package. She either was, or was close to being the best developed in every single body part. Taken as a whole, her physique was the hands down winner. I'm struggling to understand the justifications any of you have for not aknowledging that. Maybe her face isn't pretty enough for you? Maybe her hair isn't blond enough for you? Maybe her skin isn't white enough for you? There is no good reason for it.As far as being the perennial favorite that the judges MUST reward. That's crazy. In the Ms. I the judges penalized her big time. Her comeback in the ms. O was a well deserved victory that places her among the elite in the history of the sport.
As far as betty viana: Look, all these women have beautiful physiques. But she lacks a certain… aestetic balance… her biceps have no peak.
Iris is awesome, attractive, sexy, desireable.October 5, 2008 at 8:38 pm #76526cpbell0033944
ParticipantYou must admit though, that there seem to be odd decisions there every year.

You make a good point. Bodybuilding competitions are not beauty contests. Yeah, I like to see a winner have an attractive face as well, but that's not supposed to be part of the judging criteria.
It's OK to prefer one woman over another because of facial beauty, but to say the judges should have given the title to the most beautiful face is to make a mockery of women's bodybuilding. And yes, the judges themselves have made mockeries of the sport in the past…
I haven't seen any photos from the Ms. O, so I can't say whether I agree with the results.

ParticipantWell, after looking at some pictures, I have finnaly decide to give my take on this.
I think everybody makes good points here, but like DCM wrote, this is a bodybuilding contest, not a beauty pageant. So Iris did have the most developed and defined body of them all, and weather I like her appearence more or less, she was the one that looked better for a bodybuilding contest.
What I feel is weird, is they keep placing Dayana Cadeau in top. She might have better looks than Iris, but for me, she always looks like she is a week behind her dieting. She doesn't look defined or ripped enough for me.
the two ladoes that I think were ignored the most are Lisa Aukland, who looked like she could have been there head to head with Iris but they placed her 4th, and Heather Polickly (Armbrust), because I still can't figure out why they placed her 14th.
What I really don't share with the judges, is that for me Iris isn't that much ahead of the rest. The gave her 20 and to
ÇBetty Vianna they gave 62. For me that's just too much a difference for what I saw.Finnaly, let's not forget how many of us, myself included, went nuts when the IFBB added the "femininity clause" to the judges. We were pissed off, and now we complain that the Champuon isn't "too prety", or doesn`t have the looks.
Just like any contest based on judging and scoring, not everybody will be pleased with the outcome.Just my thoughts.

ParticipantBased on the current judging criteria, then, they picked the right winner. Trouble is, as long as they encourage extreme physiques and the equally extreme steroid use that generates those physiques, the contest will continue to be a small, commercially-unattractive event. Give me tonight to sleep on it, and I'll reply tomorrow morning with my plan for the Ms O. ::)
