ParticipantSounds pretty dangerous, on the one hand it's cool that one of these scientists might develop some incredible medical compounds or a real life muscle growth formula.
But on the other hand, it's possible they can invent a deadly genetic disease that could infect the human race. Computers I can consider safe, but genetic engineering? Sounds pretty dangerous.

ParticipantIsn't there about a dozen laws against things like this?

Apparently not here in the US. Researchers can't use stem cells to cure Alzheimer's but some guy in his garage can engineer a new plague. ::)

ParticipantConstructing your own electrophoresis tank is clever. Buying a clone of the green fluorescent protein gene is not going to risk human civilisation. Without huge budgets, a massive electricity bill and advanced knowledge, the ability of these people to do things that are going to risk our civilisation is minuscule. If only people knew how hard it was to make any scientific progres in a proper academic environmnt with incredibly advanced equipment – I should know; I've just spent a year doing it. This is like a guy building a V8-engined streamliner, taking it to Bobbeville Speed Week and suddenly he's going to break the World Land Speed Record. It ain't going to happen. The real risk is a break-in or fire, as gel electrophoresis requires lots of toxic chemicals. This woman's neighbourhood is at slight risk, but you and I? No.

Uh? ???
BTW, "Bobbeville" is a mis-typing, of course, I meant Bonneville.

Chris, he must think you're actually Cindy, and with the "cp" in your ID it's an easy mistake to make… :-[

They can use stem cells. They just can't have Federal funding if they use a "new" embryonic stem cell lines. The "old" embryonic stem cell lines are OK to use. Other non-embryonic stem cell lines are also OK.
The whole stem cell issue is such a lot of leftist propaganda bullshit that it's amazing to see anyone raise it who isn't mentally retarded.

According to articles I read in Scientific American, The Lancet and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the "approved" lines are so contaminated by foreign DNA as to be totally useless.
Something right-wing drones usually ignore when the subject is discussed by with knowledgable people.
