Visually it was really breathtaking and the smurfs were quite awesome in design but I cant really say its a good movie due to the critical mistakes made with the plot.
Its like they concentrated on the graphics only and merely used a skeleton plot to hold it together. The villains were sadly underdeveloped and cliched. The corporation manager would had made a much better villain if it wasnt tossed away in the middle of the movie and substituted by the cartoony, insane portrayal of the "war mad" military boss.
The "plug and play" aproach on the creatures was a crude, infantile way of simplifing metafores of spiritual comunion that usually sustain other movies by themselves.
The vehicles and the creatures themselves lacked originality in their shape design although they were quite stunning in the color aspect.
The motion capture and animation was simply spectacular and its clearly the responsible of the natural feel of the movie's world.
I was particulary astonished by the 3d particles used in several scenes, including a flametrower one that allmost had me taking cover under my seat.
Overall I would say that this movie flashed us with a leap in visual 3d techniques but we'll soon forget it to a newer one, hopefully with a story that will be worth telling by itself.
6 or 7 point of 10 at best.
Dont hate me for being honest! đCDR

He probably thinks he's keeping Gene Siskel's spirit alive. ;D
But then again, I've got a copy of Siskel's May '77 review of Star Wars where he totally trashes it, and a copy of a review for a later rerelease where he thinks its the best thing since sliced bread. đ

I agree with him on most points. The look and feel of the movie was great. But there were way to many oversimplafications and while so much was original, it had WAAAAY too many tired old ideas. I could list them all, but it would take too long. However the way the movie was made was truely great and I think will be a turning point in movie making.
I thought the miltary equipment was rather poor as most of that seems to be only a slightly more advanced version of current weaponry. The 'smurfs' were too similar to American Indians. The movie was like a scifi version of 'Dances with Wolves' meets 'Furn Gully'. I enjoyed the movie, as did everyone I went with, but I dont think its that great of a movie. Better, actually then I thought the movie would be but still not great.
I personally liked the military leader guy for the most part, but he went a little over the top at the end.

January 5, 2010 at 7:57 pm #89056MimiParticipant[font=tahoma]Glad to see BradBerry7 call out the Fern Gully comparison, as that was the FIRST thing I thought of when I saw it too. That plus âDances With Wolvesâ was dead on. But really, this story isnât new or fresh⌠itâs sadly a part of human history that goes well beyond just what the white folks did to the Indians.
But all that aside, it was a splendid movie and great visuals. As for the story, nothing really was surprising or unexpected. I thought Michelle Rodriguez looked great as the usual Cameron staple âbad ass chickâ character. Iâm surprised she didnât shave her head for this one as Jenette Goldstein did for him in Aliens, which was absolutely sexy IMHO. (BTW, a lot of this reminded me of Aliens with the human controller âwalkersâ.)
