Been a long while since I last heard that horrific cry of agony when someone had lost all their stuff and never made the effort to back it up in case of a disaster.  Especially those of us that are artists or writers, a real tragedy to lose all of your creative work(s) w/o a chance of recovery.

So, it got me to thinking maybe people are more aware to backing up their stuff then they were yrs ago, hence this poll.  8)

Not on the list is DVD's. They form the core my important backups. Lesser materials get put on a USB hard drive only, while the important stuff get's multiple back ups to DVD and external Hard Drive.

No problem, I will add DVDs to the list.

Definitely considering using external hard drives like Western Digital.  There are free programs out there that let you create an image of your current HD making it easier to copy the thing in just one huge file.

DVD's are nice but they don't have enough storage capacity unless you only have a 4.5 or 10 gb hard drive.  The only back ups I store on HD's or CD's are my animations or critical projects that cannot be lost at the time.

Now if you have a blu-ray DVD burner that's a different story.  You can store a lot more data and I would recommend using those to back up your hard drive if you were going to do so.

I currently use seagate disc wizard to back up my HD, but you can also use the Windows Easy Transfer tool as well.  I used that when I upgraded to Windows 7.

An increasing number of webhosts offer 'files' plans where you can just upload whatever you want and keep it on a webserver.  Go get it whenever you want it, wherever you want it, on whatever machine you're using.

There are also Web-based backup sites like Carbonite and Mozy which back up your computer on their servers, and then update those backups unobtrusively in the background whenever you're connected to the Internet.

I'm considering using one of these when I get the funds to.

Augh, "cloud" computing. In the words of Opus, Thrrrrrrrrrpt-thrrpt-thrrrrpt!

As far as I'm concerned, the clouds are still too etherial and flimsy to trust with my data. Almost every week you hear about "cloud" services going down (Blackberry x2, Gmail, T-Mobile's Sidekick service x3, etc, etc, etc….). Not too mention, if they can hack the Pentagon or Citibank, what makes you think they can't do the same to an online storage?
