ParticipantWell if your looking for American Amazonian impact, Carry Nation certainly packed a wicked battle-axe and knew how to use it on taverns and saloons in her temperance crusade – heck, she's chiefly responsible for the 18th Amendment which banned (for a time) the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol in the USA.
Yikes – the original battleaxe! đŽ
Whilst I admire people of strong conviction and faith, I can't say I agree with what she did – for one thing, prohibition didn't really work, and secondly, she was damaging people's livelihoods.
Think I'll stick with Bodicea. ;DMarch 16, 2007 at 6:53 am #48038Grandmaster
ParticipantActually, the bastardisation was British.
No, I was referring to the spelling of the comic book character's name evoking…well, I can't be the only one thinking, "Booty kah?"
Women! Can't live with 'em…
Carried a .38 Smith & Wesson strapped under her apron.
Settled arguments with field hands with shootouts and an unpaid bill with a fist to the debtor's face.
Hauled freight for St. Peter Mission in Cascade, Montana for ten years until she was fired for "irascibility" (see the former, above).
Held a wolfpack at bay at gunpoint overnight after her wagon was overturned and her horse bolted.
Carried post for the U.S. Postal Service (as the second female carrier in American history) through rough terrain and sub-zero weather.
Whiskey drinker. Cigar smoker. Card player. (Wouldn't have got along with Carry Nation, presumably.)
Folk hero of actor Gary Cooper. Can't make 'em big enough!
Six feet/1.8 meters tall.
200 pounds/91 kg."Stagecoach" Mary Fields.

ParticipantActually, the bastardisation was British. :'( Some academic re-read an old text, and realised that that earlier academics had mis-read the spelling of her name. The new accepted spelling – Boudicca – IS indeed pronounced Boo-dee-kah. The reason that I hate it is that it sounds to much like boutique to me – too frilly and flouncy. Bodicea (pronounced Bo-de-cea) sounds much more Amazonian and heroic.
I prefer the native pronunciation.
'Boo-di-ka'
'Boudicca'
Boudica….

"Stagecoach" Mary Fields.
So the comic calls her "Bootykah", then? ???
Sacriledge. I thought "Boo-di-kah" was lame. No, to me, she will always be Bodicea, Queen of the Iceni and the only woman in history to kick Roman arse.
I'll have to look-up Mary Fields, though – she sounds like the sort of woman I could be mates with, as well as fancy (that is if she was at all good-looking.)UPDATE: I've just looked-up Mary Fields. Wow, what a gal! Can't say she was particularly attractive, but what a drinking prtner she would have been!

Mostly it's me.

No, not at all…;D…at least not for our day…
…but what a drinking [partner] she would have been!
And someone to have at your back. As many bourbons as it would take for me to even consider a non-professional relationship with her, I'd probably die of alcohol poisoning first anyway.

I think it was pronounced "Boo-DEE-kah" in that one Duck Dodgers episode…

Participantt?-m?-(,)? / t?-mâ-(,)?
If the native pronunciation is Boudica, that's good enough for me.

Well, most natives (East Anglians with an awareness of the region's heritage, mostly) usually prefer Bodicea (pronounced Bo-di-SEEA).
