I knew that there was deep-seated anger against hollywood, pro and con, left and right – but I never knew to this extent.

“I like a good story well told. That is the reason I am sometimes forced to tell them myself.”
~ Mark Twain / Samuel Clemens (1907)October 30, 2011 at 10:22 am #104356David C. MatthewsParticipantJohn Nolte at Big Hollywood (quoted in the linked article) said it best: when it comes to actors, it’s more a matter of class than of political beliefs. In my own case, I know that most of the Hollywood actors will hold lefty beliefs that are opposite of mine, but as long as they aren’t obnoxious about them, it won’t affect my decision to patronize their movies.
Tom Hanks, for example, endorsed Obama in 2008 (and I’m guessing will do so again in 2012), but did so in a way that didn’t denigrate anyone who believed differently, and even make a joke about celebrity endorsements. So Hanks’ liberalism won’t prevent me from attending his movies. On the other hand, I will not watch another Morgan Freeman movie because of the remarks he made recently: in effect, he called me a racist because I support the principles of the Tea Party. (And now that Samuel L. Jackson has unfortunately echoed Freeman, comments, I will not be watching the upcoming Avengers movie; I’ll even have trouble watching my DVDs of the Star Wars prequels because of him.)
And I apply that to my own work: on those few occasions when I express my own political beliefs, I try to do so in a way that won’t offend the reader (with epithets and such). I don’t want to lose a fan because I’ve insulted his/her political philosophy, although I suspect I’ve lost a few simply because they don’t like my conservative/libertarian views.

I don’t care about the political views of anyone in Hollywood; if they produce good films I can watch and enjoy them. With today’s media getting as deep into the personal lives of stars as they can, you will be able to find something objectionable about almost every star out there. And while it is common for people to place greater stock in the opinions of famous people, the truth is that being a good actor or singer (or whatever else) doesn’t mean you have the foggiest idea what you are talking about in areas outside of your particular expertise.

1.) This topic is in the “Free For All” section of the forum which, as the description says, is for off-topic discussions. Your little caps lock rant is unnecessary and uncalled for. So far you are the only person to cause a problem in this thread.
2.) If you have something to say please state it in a respectable manner instead of immediately devolving into an unprovoked attack. Posts that are inflammatory for no reason will not be tolerated, you have been warned.

I would never NOT watch a movie just because an actor or director leans to a certain political view. That’s just taking things personally for no reason, unless that specific told YOU to your face, to “fuck off” then why get all bent about it?
This is what frustrates the hell out of me with politics, politics and religion should ALWAYS be separate and should never be able to affect your enjoyment of media. The only time you should be getting into heated political debates is if you’re running for office, not shooting the shit with your buddies.
If I were to express my belief that I think being extreme liberal or conservative is in my opinion the wrong direction for this country, should people suddenly stop looking at my artwork? This is why I NEVER post political things on my blog in DA. I’ll post things like that privately in facebook or if I had a website that was just for me to splurge random thoughts, it’d go there.
People have gotten so uptight and hypocritical over the stupidest things and really need to lighten the fuck up. For instance, I know a friend who says he won’t watch any movie that has naked breasts in it due to his religion, but he’ll gladly watch a violent gory movie where people are killing each other left and right.
Umm… last time I checked it was much more sinful to kill someone than it is to see someone naked.
Anyway, I’ve gone on long enough, personally I feel politics and religion should always be separate from media.
