Protests rage in India over arrest, strip search of diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York

Last night there was a news article about an Indian junior diplomat, Devyani Khobragade that was arrested on charges of Visa Fraud and making False Declarations. Apparently she was paying her housekeeper, also an Indian citizen less than $3/hour, making the housekeeper work more than 40 hours per week and had claimed that she was paying the housekeeper $4500 per month.

There is outrage in India not only over her arrest, but that US Marshals performed a strip search and cavity search. While the diplomat tried claiming diplomatic immunity, the state department says her immunity is not full immunity but rather is limited only consulate functions. The strip search and cavity search are “standard” according to US Marshalls for felony arrests. Given the mistreatment of the housekeeper, I suppose you could look at it as somewhat karmic, and perhaps it is routine, but then to look at a picture of Devyani Khobragade…
