Okay, this is an odd question: first, we know FMG, and female muscle in general, is considered ideologically sensitive material that is a rarity in mainstream media. We’ll get the occasional cartoon, or comic that manages to sneak it in to something aimed at kids without much fuss. But what about kids’books? Has there ever been any books aimed at the youth market that can pull off the same? I’ll take even an illustration of girl doing a baby bump bicep flex if anyone has an example. Also, does anyone believe it’s possible that such a book could one day exist? I’d really like to know your thoughts.

Give Yourself Goosebumps #5 – Night in Werewolf Woods

One of those choose-your-own-adventure books. I read it when I was like 11 or 12 maybe and with those kinds of books I would always try and read every single path. One of the paths has you finding magic cheerios in your pockets, eating one turned you into fish or something, while the other one gave you huge muscles and super strength. You give some to the girl in your group and all marvel at your new muscles and she lifts a giant boulder or something. I think they were supposed to be impossibly huge as somewhere else in the book you feed them to some bullies and they get so big they can barely move.

It was the first time I remember reading about FMG and testing out strength in general, didn’t get the internet until a year or so later. I got it from the library for when I went on our family summer holiday and while even at that age I would choose books/films/whatever if they had potential for strong women in it, this took me completely by surprise. I’m glad I was staying in a tent on my own.

I secretly bought a copy a little later (not sure why secretly as no one would have ever suspected) but I think its been lost to time. PDFs and copies are still around though. Although the girl in the book is like 13 or 14 or something so lets not get weird about it.

I remember Night in Werewolf Woods! That was an early surprise encounter for me, too.
